Fellow Natives


It's not entirely true that Tulum is abandoned; these guys seem to be doing quite well. Iguanas are abundant in the region, and it's very likely that the Mayas ate them. You can find them on the menu in some restaurants around the area (I've been told they taste better than chicken).
These iguanas, as you can see, are not green, but gray, and have some minor anatomical differences from your common pet iguana. They are not tame, but are fairly calm (similar to city pigeons) and might even let you get as close as I did above, if you're slow and smooth enough about it.
