The Dozen Red Roses

Heartbreak comes to all at one time or another.
We all bear things in different ways.
How was it that the blossoms would predict my future and pain?

The Dozen Red Roses

The sound of the doorbell, a cold winter day,
A delivery of roses in a vase of fine crystal,
He smiled at me and said "A special delivery"
Taking the parcel, my heart was a-quiver.

I opened the card and read what you wrote,
It had mentioned sweet love, but I felt so uneasy.
Just one night before, our chat was quite stilted,
The roses were blood on the December snow.

My heart was pounding, the ache uncontrolling,
I stared at the blossoms and each mocked my heart.
And later that evening, the first rose had faded,
And everyday next, another did follow.

The first was saying that our love is soon over,
The second was telling that you had found another.
The third rose to fade was my hope of our future.
The fourth was a mention of what I thought once was ours.

The fifth rose to fade was a sad, broken promise,
The sixth was saying I shouldn't despair.
The seventh red rose was our favourite number,
It faded away with all of the others.

The eighth rose spoke of a love long ago,
Of heartbreak and sadness, long passing hours.
Long winter nights, without sweet surrender,
Of love once given, with no thought of the 'morrow.

The ninth red rose foretold of the future,
That you would leave on the day of my annual solar.
The tenth crimson blossom had a message for me,
I should have never loved you as I had.

The eleventh red rose wished me "Merry Christmas"
And oh, how I cried on that magical day.
The twelfth was a handshake, wishing me well,
They all faded together, that stunning display.

The greens that surrounded the roses bouquet,
Held all of the messages you failed to say,
The soft words of love, the sweet night-time kisses,
Had all faded away, in that vase filled with roses.

Written one day past Valentine's Day in the year 2000.

In realisation of the truth,
A heart in healing, somehow coping,
Yet strong enough to hold her head up....

.......and again face the world......
