The Tapanahony River has many dangerous rapids (sulas) and a few treacherous rapids such a Gaanolo (above). Many boats have capsized attempting to go upriver or downriver through Gaanolo. A portage has been made around the rapids. Another rapids famous for dumping freight in the river is called "Poligudu" (Spoil Goods). |

The primary means of travel on the Tapanahony River is by dugout canoe, power by outboard motors or paddles. Both Aukan men and women become skilled at navigation. Travel by motorized canoe requires unusual skill and experience. During the dry season, the river becomes shallow bringing treacherous rocks near the surface. Skilled boatmen know where all (or most of) the rocks are and how to navigate around them without damaging the bottom of the boat, or the motor and its propellor. |
