Herbs and Vitamins:
In the last
15 years herbs have become
more available, not so much a specialty
item anymore. Descriptions for use are
often short on bottled herbs and non-existent
on bulk packages.
Here is a list of Vitamin attributes and the herbs
one should look for.
Vitamin A:
Needed for night vision and cell
growth. Vitamin A
is stored in the body but may be quickly dissipated
by stress and strain.
Some herbs rich in Vitamin A are Alfalfa, Dandelion,
Paprika, Parsley and Watercress. Parsley though
reportedly contains some potentially harmful alkaloids
and should not be eaten in large quantities.
Vitamin B1 (Thiamin):
Needed for growth and appetite.
Some herbs rich in Vitamin B1 are Fenugreek, Kelp (sushi?)
Dulse and Bladderwrack (Wheat germ as well though it
is
thought of more as a cereal than an herb).
Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin):
Needed for normal growth in children
and good nutrition
in adults.
B2 shares most of the same sources as B1, Fenugreek,
Kelp, Dulse and Bladderwrack.
Vitamin B12:
Needed for normal development
of red blood cells. It is
a growth factor for children and helps build muscle.
Herbs rich in B12 are Alfalfa, Kelp, Dulse and Bladderwrack.
Niacin ( a B complex Vitamin)
Prevents pellagra (Niacin deficiency).
Symptoms may
include skin changes, mental and nervous dysfunction
and diarrhea according to Webster's College Dictionary.
Vitamin C:
What needs be said about this
staff of life Vitamin. Beneficial
for more things than may be noted here, it does not
store in the
body can be destroyed by oxidation (storage) and cooking
(even at low temperature) so it must be consumed daily.
Burdock seed, Capsicum (a hot red pepper), Coltsfoot,
Elderberries (not the wine) Rosehips, Watercress and
oddly Oregano. I believe these things need be consumed
fresh though.
Vitamin D:
Needed for building and keeping
good bones and teeth. Very
little of this Vitamin is stored in the body.
Watercress and Wheatgerm are the only botanicals I
have
cataloged with this Vitamin at this time.
Vitamin E:
This Vitamin has been acclaimed
to be beneficial for good
skin and a health sex life though the veracity of these
claims
may be questionable.
Add to Fenugreek, Kelp, Dulse, Bladderwrack, Wheat
germ,
Dandelion and Watercress, Linseed (source of linseed
oil)
and Sesame.
Vitamin K:
Needed for the clotting of blood.
Contained in Alfalfa, Chestnut leaves and Shepherds
Purse.
Vitamin P (Rutin):
Believed to strengthen tiny blood
vessels, source cataloged
are Buckwheat, German Rue and Paprika.
Good health to you
