STATE ENVIROTHON WINNERS
team

The Big Sky Gold Team from Missoula placed first in the Montana Envirothon

The Big Sky High School Gold Team from Missoula placed first in the Montana Envirothon Competition and went on to represent Montana in the International Envirothon in Nova Scotia where they placed tenth.

The outdoors, hands-on contest, is a program for students in hopes that the competition will motivate them to learn more about the environment. The event tests the students' knowledge about soils, forestry, watersheds, wildlife and aquatics. The competition finishes with each team giving an oral presentation dealing with developing solutions to a natural resource problem. The Chapter is a cosponsor of the Montana Envirothon.

GATEWAY TO THE FUTURE
by Warren Kellog

"Gateway to the Future - Conserving Private Land" was the theme of the 2000 SWCS Annual Conference in St. Louis. Five members of the Montana Chapter attended the conference.

This probably sounds a little corny, but the conference did serve as a "gateway". It was a "gateway" to learning about how others throughout the world are working to preserve private lands as well as a "gateway" in furthering my own personal development in doing natural resource conservation work.

The Montana Chapter was awarded the Outstanding Chapter Award for the Northern Plains Region. This is the second year in a row.

The conference had its normal array of exhibitors, presenters, and special events. There was record attendance by folks from all over the U.S. and Canada. More and more of our membership are viewing these conferences as an excellent opportunity to learn, network, and have fun.

Next year's Annual Conference will be in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina August 4-8, 2001. Check it out at: http://members.tripod.com/~swcs/2001.html. By being an active member in the Montana Chapter, the Executive Board is committed to helping you find the necessary resources to attend these conferences.
