Poole shares the problem, with many areas in the U.K., of an increasing Waste Stream and a falling or unstable market for many recyclables.
At the moment Poole Produces
Domestic Waste .........
76,842 tons approx.
We Recycle ..........
19.76%
Garden Waste .............
goes to Eco Compost facility at Hurn, Bournemouth
Clinical Waste ...........
goes for Incineration at Bournemouth
Veterinary Waste ........
ditto
The rest ...........
to landfill , again outside our boundary
We have a black box scheme for recyclables for most households , and there are 'Bring sites’ for glass.
The Group’s activities
So far we have concentrated on Educating ourselves as to how the Waste Stream is dealt with . We have visited-
SELCHP ,London, to see large scale Incineration
Our ‘local’ Recycling Site.
Eco Composting facility to see Garden Waste dealt with.
‘Local’ Landfill site , and seen Methane being used for Electricity Generation
We would like to see within our Borough
. Special facilities
for Battery collection
.
for green waste collection
. A Scrap Store ....
one of our members has attracted funds to set this up to serve Dorset, still looking for a depot in Poole/Bournemouth
Some of our initiatives include
A leaflet on recycling to all households in the borough
Working with Wrigleys Chewing Gum on a Poster to encourage the binning of gum
Writing to the Consumer Association ref. their reports and asking for a more Environmentally aware assessment of goods and their eventual disposal
Writing to ‘guilty ’ firms ref. the overpackaging of their goods
Making up games for festivals , fun events, to get our message across to the children ( but at the same time to the adults who are looking on!)
A proposed venture will be to work with our Council to facilitate a pilot scheme . This to bring a monetary benefit from any increase in recycling back to individual communities to spend as they wish. ....but more of this at a later date
We need help with ...........letter writing to ‘guilty’ firms , creating publicity material, and with many other things.
