POOLE AGENDA 21

Water Transport Project

Poole has one of the largest harbours in the world. Poole LA21 believes the opportunities for water borne transport are not fully exploited, and that several new routes could make a viable contribution to Public transport provision, and reduce road congestion
Current RoutesCommentary
Poole - Cherbourg
Poole - Jersey/Guernsey
Brittany Ferries and Condor. Daily services throughout the year, cars & freight. Few public transport links
Sandbanks - Shell Bay Frequent service across harbour mouth. Carries bus.
Poole Quay - Brownsea/Sandbanks Summer season daytime service - heavily used by tourists
Potential routes Commentary
Coastal service - Torbay to Portsmouth The geography makes this route far shorter than the road alternatives in both directions from Poole. There is significant tourist traffic which could make transport by boat part of the tourist experience.
Swanage to Poole/Bournemouth A significant part of the population of Swanage work in the centre of either Poole or Bournemouth. A ferry service could act both as a commuter link and a tourist attraction. Purbeck council have commissioned a study into this.

We have proposed promotion of a circular 'public transport' day trip route utilising the Ferry, Steam train and Red buses. This has been passed to Purbeck and Poole Tourism Departments.

New 2001 : Dorset Belles will take cycles for free on their services between Poole and Swanage space allowing.

Commuting from/to the Purbecks is also being pursued by the Purbeck Rail partnership - see our Public Transport project.

We have contacted all local authorities between Torbay and Portsmouth to establish interest in additional routes.
We have explored better links between cross channel ferries and public transport.

If you would like to contribute to discussions, we would be pleased to hear from you.
