POOLE AGENDA 21

Improved Public Transport Project

Over recent years, the Poole/Bournemouth connurbation had the fastest deteriorating average road speed of any city in the UK. Poole LA21 is working to promote the opportunities for better public transport to assist in reducing road congestion, improve air quality, and a better urban environment.

Rail

PA21 IdeasCommentary
Current Service Hourly fast train Weymouth - Poole - Bournemouth - London
3 trains per hour peak between Hamworthy and Christchurch
No passenger trains on Hamworthy branch to international ferry port
Aim for frequent trainsEvery 5 minutes between Hamworthy and Christchurch
Use link to Ferry TerminalSignificant redevelopment of Hamworthy is planned. Railway could be a viable alternative to high impact road bridge.
Explore light rail optionsHigh frequency service could be gained from using trams or other rapid transit between New Milton and Wareham with a link to the Swanage Railway. For Bournemouth and Christchurch, this could link town centres where current stations do not. Also to link Wimborne and northern suburbs. See our DARTS proposal
ActionResult
We have contacted Railtrack who indicate main line is at capacity of current signalling, but to renew in a few years
Hamworthy branch likely to be uneconomic for operators to open
We wrote to South West Trains and Virgin, no response to date
We have been working with other local groups on possibilities for frequent services across the conurbation. See our DARTS Light Rail Train proposal. This is now being investigated as part of the Local Transport Plan for the South East Dorset connurbation.
Commuting from/to the Purbecks is also being pursued by the Purbeck Rail partnership, who hope to introduce a 2 hourly service between Swanage, Wareham, Poole and Bournemouth within the next 2 years.
For schemes elsewhere see the Light Rail Transit Association (LRTA) Site

Buses

Current ServiceCommentary
Two main operators, Wilts and Dorset (Poole and rural Dorset)
and Yellow Buses(Bournemouth)
First Group also run services X53, X54 and X55 through Poole, occasional buses to Castlepoint. This includes the 'Jurrassic Coast' service
LA21 Ideas
Through ticketingAcross connurbation, across companies
Train/bus tickets have been introduced locally
Combined timetable/route mapTo better enable people to plan journeys
Links to Ferries/AirportTo reduce dependance on car
Yellow buses now have 4 /day from Triange to Bournemouth Travel Interchange to Airport
Increased frequencyTo reduce dependance on car
Vary timetableto take account of delays at peak periods

We have contacted both companies. They are currently investing in low floor buses and some routes.

Dec 2004 - W&d Introduce 'more' high frequency buses
Jan 2005 - w&d University bus links

Taxis

Current ServiceCommentary
Currently licensed in three boroughs, Poole, Bournemouth & Christchurch
Different conditions apply (fares, age of cars)
Cars not licensed to pick up fares in different boroughs
LA21 Ideas
Pick up fares across connurbationreduce costs and running empty
Multiple occupancyUsers share cost of taxi to similar location
Links to London AirportsAbility to gain return fare (reduce empty journeys)
