TO IMPROVE THE ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY OF POOLE'S PONDS AND STREAMS AND ADJACENT GREEN SPACES AND TO ENHANCE THEIR VALUE, INTEREST AND ATTRACTIVENESS FOR LOCAL COMMUNITIES,
NEW PONDS ARE ALSO BEING CREATED.
The project as a whole is being supported by the Environment Agency, but some of the major projects will depend on further funding.
Ponds and Streams visited and the extent of work identified. Expert advice and ecological surveys have been obtained where appropriate The advice and support of Borough of Poole - Countryside Services is essential to the success of the project.
Major de-silting and pond deepening Removal of excessive or inappropriate pond growth, Reduction of excessive shading by selective tree pruning.
Reduction of mowing regime on some areas of green space, to establish meadow habitats.
Plant native trees, shrubs and plants to provide nectar, food and appropriate diversity of habitats for wildlife.
Major de-silting and pond deepening, and major tree-works will be carried out by professional contractors as far as can be covered by the Environment Agency grant.
Much of the subsidiary work, bramble and inappropriate scrub clearance, planting etc will be carried out by volunteers from Poole Agenda 21, F.O.E., B.T.C.V. and now hopefully New Deal.
It is hoped to achieve much of the work during the coming Autumn /Winter season. Local communities are being asked to put forward ideas and to participate in the long-term management of their local ponds, streams and green spaces.
Improvement of local environments, increase in biodiversity and the demonstration of local people, voluntary organisations and Local Government coming together to achieve the aims of Poole Agenda 21;
