This mask was created by Ida Ayu Laksmi of Mas, daughter of I.B.Sutarja, and a member of one of Bali's most distinguished carving families. Traditionally masks were carved either as sacred temple objects or for performers in ritual and instructional dramas to assume the mask's
character.
More recently masks, like this one, have also become the underlying canavas for striking three-dimensional paintings, created for purely decorative purposes.
