The Ritual

"Air and fire, protect my house,(light yellow candle)

"I chant this spell.

This charm I see,

As my word so mote it be."

Now allow the candles to burn out unhindered.

Casting Circles and Calling Quarters

The circle is the sacred space in which magick is worked, where Witches can meet with the

Goddess and God. The word "circle" may be misleading, though, because actually what you are

creating is a sphere that encompasses all participants and the altar. The magick circle defines the

ritual area, holds in personal power and shuts out all distractions and negative energies. You can

use objects on the ground to show the boundaries of the circle, such as stones, flowers, branches,

candles (my favorite) or crystals. It is formed with personal power which is felt and visualized as

streaming from the body to form what, to me, ends up looking like a bubble made of mist. Some

use their athame, or magick knife, to direct this power, others use their hands. Once the energy is

flowing through your fingertips or athame, walk the circle three times clockwise, envisioning the

mist (or bubble, or light, or whatever works for you) trailing outward from you to form the

sphere. When the circle is completed, shut off the energy by shaking your hand or simply pulling

the energy back into yourself.

Once the circle is cast, you are ready to call the quarters if you wish. There are many different

energies and beings that can be called, summoned or stirred to protect the circle - from

watchtowers to angels to faeries to elementals to element energies. No matter which type of

quarter call you use, when working with quarters, envision a door or opening of some kind and

visualize the energy or being that will be coming through that door to guard the circle. All quarter

energies should be dismissed in the same manner they were called. I'll give you an example of the

type of quarter call I use during New Moon rituals. As I call each quarter, I face that direction and

hold out my athame with both hands, feeling the energy from that element flowing into me:

To the East, I summon the forces of Air To blow out the old and bring in the new on your winds

of change

To the South, I summon the forces of Fire To burn away regrets And shine your gentle rays upon

me for growth

To the West, I summon the forces of Water To cleanse me of negativity And purify my thoughts

To the North, I summon the forces of Earth Let your renewing strength bury all ills And open new

paths before me

I always use elemental energies during quarter calls. Because the New Moon is a time for new

beginnings, you'll notice that my quarter calls reflect the type of magick that will be worked inside

the circle Do some research and get to know the energy you will be using. If you use elemental

energies, take some time to meditate on each element and figure out its properties and

correspondences. There are literally thousands of ways to call quarters and cast circles. I've just

given you an overview, because it's always best to figure out what works for you. I work very well

with element energies, but you might have an affinity for something else.

Binding

The purpose of this ritual is to rid yourself of somebody who is mentally or emotionally abusing you. It's

similar to my banishing ritual.

(I used this on a particularly nasty boss - it's holding firm so far!)

Materials:

Cloth poppet, leave the head unstitched until you are ready to begin the ritual

Needle and thread

Some personal item from the person you want to bind (fingernail clippings, hair, handwriting sample)

Black ribbon

Black candle

Cauldron or other fireproof container

Sterilized needle

Piece of paper and pen

One candle at each quarter (optional)

Ritual:

Call the quarters - I like to use candles at each quarter to form a circle of fire for extra protection.

Light the black candle

Concentrating deeply on the person you are binding, place the personal object inside the head of the

poppet and sew it shut.

Tie the black ribbon around the poppet's head, signifying the binding of that person.

''With harm to none, my will be done

I hereby bind you (name of person)

Your words cannot harm me

Your thoughts cannot harm me

You cannot harm me''

Continue chanting this or something like it until you feel power surging through you. Visualize the person

helpless to slander or verbally and mentally abuse you while you are chanting.

Now, to bind the spell -

If you have a sigil or a Craft name, sign it on the small piece of paper. If not, sign your own full name. If

others are working the ritual with you, they too should sign the paper.

With the sterilized needle, prick one of your fingers and put a small drop of blood over your signature.

Again, if others are working with you, they should place a drop of blood over their signatures. (using a

different needle, of course)

Fold the paper, light it on fire and drop it into the cauldron (which should be on a heat-proof surface!).

Meditate on the flames until the paper completely burns away. If you are working with a group, join

hands at this point and feel the power surging around the circle as the spell is bound.

Ground and close the circle. Thank the Goddess and God for their protection and power

Discard the poppet as far away from you as possible within the next few days.

Banishing spell

to be performed during the waning moon

tools: heatproof container or cauldron

black or white candle

basil and garlic (for uncrossing, protection)

paper/black pen

Cast the circle

Invocation of the God and Goddess

Statement of purpose

I am here to banish negative influences from my life.

Right now, (name) is exerting an extremely negative force upon me. I ask for the God and Goddess to

assist me in banishing these forces and eliminating his/her destructiveness.

Consecrate the cauldron as follows

sprinkle with salt water

recite:

In the name of the Lord and Lady I charge you to serve me within this circle.

I clear you of all former influences and energies that you may be fit for the workings of Magick herein.

Do the same with the candle

On a piece of paper, write full name of person to be banished. Roll up and tie with black string. Sprinkle

with salt water and recite

Thou creature of paper.

By paper made, by paper changed.

Thou art not paper, but thou art negative influences in (person to be bound).

So mote it be!

Light the black candle.

Burn the paper in the candle, visualizing all negative power over you vanishing in the flames and rising out

of your world with the smoke

Sprinkle basil and garlic over the flames and recite:

Blazing force of cleansing fire

Help me in this rite.

By air and earth,

water and fire

So be you bound

With this rite,

Your power takes flight

Sky and sea,

Keep harm from me

Cord go round,

Power be bound

Your negativity will no longer come my way.

From henceforth, your power over me is banished.

So Mote it Be!

Let paper burn itself out while visualizing a healthy, positive relationship with the person

Thanking the God and Goddess

Close the circle, thank the watchtowers for their protection

Protection Charm Spell

contributed by Lisa Walker

Special Tools

One red candle and one white candle

A small piece of white paper

protection oil (pre-made or homemade)*

ink pen

red ribbon

Cast the circle

Set a white candle alight on the left to represent the Goddess and a red candle alight on the right to

represent the God. Place materials for the charm between the candles.

Using the protection oil, with the index finger of the right hand, draw a pentagram in the middle of the

paper while saying "With the seal of this pentagram I request this charm be used for protection".

Using a pen, in the center of the oil-drawn pentagram, draw the rune Algiz, the rune of protection. Say

"With this rune, Algiz, I request this charm be used for protection".

If you're doing the ritual for someone else, hand him/her the piece of paper and tell him/her to concentrate

on the rune and what it means and ask aloud for what you want. Then to seal those energies into the

charm, tell him/her, "When you are ready, roll the paper up tightly, lengthwise and give it back to me."

When the charm is handed back it is wrapped three times with a red ribbon and tied into a bow.

Consecrate the charm with an element of the God, fire, and an element of the Goddess, air (the smoke

from the candles).

Hold the charm over the red candle of the God and say, "I consecrate you in fire for (name) so that

he/she can defend and protect him/herself with the powers he/she has."

Hold the charm in the smoke of the white candle of the Goddess and say, "I consecrate you in air for

(name) so that he/she can defend and protect him/herself with the powers he/she has."

Tightly clasp the charm in both hands, the right hand around the charm and the left over your right.

Concentrate on the charms' task.

Seal the left end of the charm with white wax and right end with red wax.

The charm is complete and given to the intended person.

Close the circle

*If you're making the protection oil yourself, you can use this recipe:

1 T base oil

4 drops primrose

4 drops lavendar

2 drops sandlewood

Solitary New Moon ritual

Special tools:

cedar or sage smudging wand

white candle

Cast the circle

Use the smudging wand to purify the space as you move around the circle.

Invocation to the Goddess

(ring bell with arms in Goddess position, arms in a V above your head)

Great Hecate

Queen of the Underworld

Protectress of all Wicca

It is my will on this night of the new moon

to overcome my shadows

and bring about change

I invite you to my circle to assist and protect me in my rite.

Invocation to the God

Great Anubis,

God of Protection

It is my will on this night of the new moon

to overcome my shadows

to bring about change

I invite you to my circle

to assist me and protect me in my rite.

Statement of intent

Dark is the night as I reach this turning point

Here is a time of death, yet a time of rebirth.

Endings and beginnings

Ebbings and flowings

A journey done and a journey yet to start.

As the wheel turns, I see birth, death and rebirth

and I know that every end is a beginning.

Meditation

Remember a time in your life when you were miserable, depressed and felt like you couldn't go on.

Let the painful memories overtake you, feeling yourself weaken and become frightened. Put yourself

back in that pain-filled time in your life.

As you meditate on that time, sink down the floor and curl up in an embryonic position.

You are completely obsessed by pain and depression. The shadows around you lengthen and darkness

spreads.

Then! Arise! Light your white candle and hold it high overhead.

Say:

In darkness, there is light!

I feel energy and life returning to me!

I feel my heartbeat strong

I feel the power of the universe and the power of the Goddess and God within me.

Pass the candle over your body, tuning in completely with the light, feeling its power heal and protect

you.

Allow its rays to completely penetrate your being, healing and cleansing you.

As you are doing this, chant

Let the light cast out all darkness

Cakes and wine

Thank the God and Goddess for their presence

Close the circle

Mirror Spell

This spell can be found, originally in "Witchcraft for Tomorrow" by Doreen Valiente (Hale, 1978).

For this you will need :

a small mirror Joss sticks/Incense Two candles (Appropriate colours if possible) and matches (I

have a lighter I wear round my neck like a sanctimonious pendant)

Ensure peace and quiet. Draw the curtains - when the candles are lit there should be just enough

light to see your face. Cast your circle, supposedly by strongly visualising it (You may choose to

you it your 'traditional' way, hopefully it will not adversely affect the spell). Light Incense and

candles.

Now look into the mirror and concentrate upon the desired wish, Concentrate your eyes upon the

reflection of your eyes, Then close your eyes and be still, develop the image of your wish in your

mind and when you have visualised it clearly open your eyes, again concentrate hard upoon the

eyes in the mirror, trying to look through them into a space beyond. Whisper the wish three times,

light another Joss stick or burn more incense if you wish. Contemplate for a moment. Close your

ritual and allow the circle to fade.

This spell can also be used to build self-confidence by talking to oneself, in the mirror, as if to a third

party!!

Anger Spell

From "The Spiral Dance" by Starhawk

This spell needs to be done alongside flowing water - I suggest in a private corner surrounded by

bushes at the side of a stream.

Create your circle. Cup a black stone in your hands and raise it to your forehead, concentrate and

send all your anger into the stone. Do this for as long as you can until you can do it no longer,

then hurl the stone with all your might into the water and say:

"With this stone Anger be gone Water bind it No-one find it!"

Place your palms upon the ground for a few moments to earth the power and allow your circle to

fade. Now go home and take care of yourself for you may feel depleted for a while, but you will be

better. Alternatively, you may feel great straight away.

Healing spell

Candles: 2 White Insence & Oils: Your Descretion 1 Red 1 Green 1 Blue 1 Purple 1 Black 1 Silver

Place the red, 1 white, 1 black and blue candels at the four quarters, then place the white and

black on the left and right of the quarters, and finally place the silver in the center. Open the

circle.
