The frightening thing about seeing lithops in their natural habitat, is that you become aware of the fact that this amazing plant, capable of withstanding the toughest of conditions, cannot survive the onset of mankind. One particular colony was at first not noticeable amongst litter and rubbish.
Farmers in the area, through no fault of their own, do not seem to be aware of the fact that they are surrounded by an exotic plant that in a few years might be nonexistent.
Having an unexplicable love for these plants and knowing that certain others feel this way , we have decided to concentrate our efforts on conserving them. During our trips we have made contact with a few farmers in various areas to get them to realise the urgency of the situation. With the farmers cooperation, we would like to collect seeds from as many colonies as possible to replant seedlings if the colony has been wiped out or needs a boost. Thus far, we have had much success and co-operation from the farmers involved.
