About the Island

Sitting in the dark waters of Laughing Duck Lake, Laughing Duck Island is about 500 acres of solitude that survives in an existence of eternal night. Much of the vegetation has evolved into species that are luminescent, shedding just enough light to make themselves visible in the darkness.

Some species of fish that swim in the lake also possess the characteristic of self-luminescence. The crayfish are perhaps the most amusing of the waterborn creatures, creeping below upon the pebbled bottom of the shoreline waters of the island. And what island in darkness wouldn't be complete without fireflies? Fireflies are found everywhere on the island.

As for air breathing creatures, there have been none seen or heard but for the lone laughing duck. It was suspected that the duck either came from the mainland that sits about a mile behind the island, or it somehow was pulled into the 'fold' that the caretaker induced to get here. As no life or flicker of light has ever been seen from the mainland, the duck most likely arrived with the caretaker. It is the laughing duck who officiates as the island's concierge and watchful eye when the caretaker is gone.

For those who visit the island, the Caretaker has left the porch light shining to make the lodge a little easier to find. It is faintly seen in the view above near the lake's edge to the left of the tallest peak.
