The public - permits

One of the more important tasks of an environment technologist in the public sector is to issue (or deny) permits for the activities of others. He or she will be employed in a town's or county's public service, or something similar.

What you must do is, to see if a company stays within the limits set for noise, emmission of waste, etc. And some types of companies are only to be placed in special industrial zones, and there are other rules that you must see that they observe.

So you must know the laws of the environment protection act, and at least have a good knowledge of the environment protection act and some other laws.

Luckily there are tools for that, both in print and on computer files, but you don't get around knowing about it, so you can avoid looking the answers up in books and databases all the time.

Don't worry - you won't be buried in laws and papers. But you must know where you find the rules that apply, and you will have to understand what the words that are used, means. If a case gets too complicated, the town or county must have a lawyer you can ask - you can't know everything.

Actually it is a surprise how many people you get into contact with in that way. It is not only the factories that have to keep the laws on the environment, it is also valid for 'ordinary' people, even for leisure time activities.
