Bennebo - a little village in Denmark

Bennebo is a little village where I live, it is inTornved kommune (Tornved Municipality), 1 km (2/3 miles) south of main route 23 (Skovvejen), between Kalundborg and Holbæk. (Or between Jyderup and Mørkøv, if you can find them on a map). It has about 100 inhabitants, if you count the farms around it in.

Tornved Kommune - in the middle of Vestsjælland

Tornved Kommune has about17000 inhabitants. As you can see Denmark is split up in smaller communities than for instance USA - but that is the case for most European countries. Most people in Tornved live in Jyderup, Mørkøv og Knabstrup, which the 3 railroad stations in the municipality ('kommunen'). A good part of the inhabitants live in the villages: Stigs Bjergby and Skamstrup. There are also some smaller villages: Skellingssted, Mørkøv Kirkeby, Tornved, Frydendal, Høed, Holmstrup, Askov, Sørninge, Brokøb, Naustok etc.  (When you use Bill Gates' TerraServer at a certain scale, you notice Akselholm and Nøkkentved as being the only towns in Tornved, but of course Tornved is a bit distant from the US  -  the two 'towns' has a population of 50 and 20. At an other scale it is Jyderup and Mørkøv).

Jyderup is in the western end of the municipality. It has the town hall and some bussinesses, shopping mall and shops. There is a camping ground, which is passed by the Jyderup path, a route for bicycles. The tourist office and the largest of the libraries are here as well.
The other towns inhabitants think that  Jyderup takes more than its share of the activities.
Jyderup is know for the anual accordeon meeting in August.
Near Jyderup is Skarridsø, which is an 2 km² big lake surrounded by forest. Bicycle routes no. 4 and 7 (Cykelruterne nr. 4 og 7) passes it.

Mørkøv is in the middle of the municipality. It has som smaller producing companies in the industry quarter and some trade. One of them is a furniture shop. The biggest factory is the concrete ware plant outside of town.
Mørkøv is known for its fare, Mørkøv Kræmmermarked, which is in September.

Knabstrup is a smaller town with a few companies. A few kilometres outside the town is Knabstrup Teglværk (Knabstrup Tile Works, in Jernløse Kommune). The tile works is now closed, but functions as a cultural workshop.

Skamstrup is mainly known for the bakery, Skamstrup Brødfabrik, which deliveres bread to all of the island Sjælland. There is a camping site, mainly for autocampers and camping trailers. The local vintage wind mill unfortunately burned down during a storm on Decembr 3. 1999, which is really sad. It had just been reconstructed by Skamstrup Møllelaug, Skamstrup Mill Guild. They have now bought Gislinge Mill and are working at rebuilding it in Skamstrup now.

Stigs Bjergby is mainly known for its church and for Bjergbygård, which has a museum for horse carts. Bjergbyhus was a multi media-workshop, which took part in production of several magazines and papers, and in the education of computer users. It is currently struck by a scandal, and is probably closed.

Holmstrupis known for its school, which is a bit off the main road, but with access to the nature.Bromølle Kro, which is a famous inn or hotel, is just south of Holmstrup, by the small river Åmose Å.

Mørkøv Kirkebyis famous for its church, with many fine mural paintings (see Copenhagen Universitys home page with all the Danish churches). Toftholm Gods is situated just outside of town.
Askov has a big music shop, which used to be in Knabstrup. Frydendal is mainly known for Torbenfeldt Castle (there is no public access).
