1. LAND FARMING:
This method is applied to several kinds of wastes in which partial or complete breakdown of the waste takes place in treatment beds. Microbes indigenous to waste or contaminated soils are typically used. A vast majority of hazardous waste is disposed of by this method.
In this technique the waste is mixed with wood chips or straw to allow air flow.The waste pile tends to become anaerobic with the consequent formation of organic acids.
Some dangerous chemicals are destroyed at a temperature of about 1000 deg celsius, not without the production of equally toxic gases and other by-product. This is also extremely energy intensive.
Industrial wastes are neutralized and sent to common water treatment plants, where they may be further broken down. The toxicity of the waste is diluted either by recycling a part of the treated product or by adding fresh water to the plant.
