MATHIAS/MATHIS
This line begins with Sarah Mathias. She was born in North Carolina in approximately 1775. She married John Chappell on May 7, 1795 in North Carolina. She died in Twiggs County, Georgia on 1835. I have Sarah and John's children (name's that is!), if you're interested, you can email me. I'll be glad to share information.
Sarah's parents were Thomas Mathis, Jr and Mary Ann Rutherford. Thomas was born in Halifax County, Virginia on June 9, 1756. He and Mary Ann married in Chatham County, North Carolina on April 16, 1772. He also fought in the Revolutionary War. Thomas died December 20, 1829 in Hancock County, Georgia. I have their children's info also.
Thomas Sr was born about 1713 and died about 1765 in Halifax County, North Carolina. His wife's name was Eliza and his father's name was Thomas (James) Mathias. I have some information on Thomas Sr's kids and a few children of Thomas (James) Mathias. Glad to share!!
The following is information sent to me by a relative, Barbara Good. It is from a journal on the Slaughter Family by William Allen Slaughter, 1804-1886. (Some of the information is misleading or incorrect. In other words, I'm stumped!! Thomas had a brother Charles and a son Charles. I've got to check this out!!)
Thomas Mathis lived in South Carolina before the Revolutionary War and was a staunch Whig but, the Tories were too strong for the Whigs and he had to take his family and go to North Carolina and remain until after the war. He then returned to his old home but, afterwards sold out and settled in Hancock County, Georgia where he died.
Thomas had four boys: Robert, Gabriel, Charles and John. I don't know the names of any of their wives except Charles'. Mary's two brothers were named Alfred and Henry. Her mother's maiden name was Lee and she was from Virginia. She was related to General Robert E. Lee but, I'm not sure how close.
Charles's wife, Mary, was a Rutherford but, I cannot tell more of her family. They raised ten children, four sons and six daughters. Their oldest daughter, Sarah, married John Chappell. Charles died leaving Mary to raise four little girls, Martha Ann, Julia Elizabeth,Mary Susan, and Sidney.
Any additionnal information will be appreciated!!
