John (III) was killed on his plantation in Kingston between 1830-1860. Lightning struck a tree which fell on John in a wagon overseeing work being done and he was killed instantly.

John's youngest son, John Harrison Gattis, John (IV), was born a few months after his father was killed, being the only child of his mother, Elizabeth Morsten Lumpkin Gaddis, some say Elizabeth Lloyd, daughter of John E. Lloyd. Elizabeth taught school in Georgia, but is said to be buried at Cedar Bluff, Alabama. John Harrison Gattis is buried at Hopewell Cemetery, near Ashville, Alabama.

John was raised by one of his sisters, Mat Gaddis, who was the wife of Jim Smith of Kingston. Another sister married a Brooks and moved to Oklahoma.

John Harrison Gattis married 1st Dolly Smith. Their children were: John Samuel, John (V), born March 9, 1886, died July 5, 1934; William Ode, married 1st Willie D., born April 3, 1882, died May 19, 1901, married 2nd Minnie; Charlie, died at age of 14, of typhoid fever.

She was the daughter of Benjamin Cleveland and Martha Angaline McCullars Bryant. John and Sarah are both buried in Gibbs Chapel Cemetery, Blount County, Alabama. They had eight children: Alfonso, who was found dead in his bed as a baby; Martha Maggie, born August 17, 1907, died December 25, 1967, married 1st December 19, 1925 to Leroy Roscoe Heald, born October 26, 1903, died April 13, 1941, married 2nd John Sherman Beck, born February 27, 1904; Joseph Walker, born February 22, 1918, died September 3, 1978, married November 28, 1935 to Mammie Ruth Coin, born September 22, 1916; John Sylvester, John (VI) born January 10, 1921, died March 23, 1982, married December 11, 1935 to Loraine Witt, born July 25, 1919; Clifford Arnett, born July 23, 1928, died March 18, 1969, married June 30, 1945 to Nola Euthema Horton; and Roland Yvonne, born August 6, 1931, died 1981, married Lola Mae Mathews, born December 29, 1930.

Joseph Ozell Gattis was married six times. He was first married to Bonnie. Their children are: Darlene, Eugene, Cathy.

His second and third wife was Pansy. Their children are: Steve, Gary, and Jeff.

I forgot who his fourth wife was. They had no children.

His fifth wife was Debra Elaine Holcomb. They had only one child: Josee Elaine Gattis, born July 8, 1981 in Gadsden, Alabama.

His sixth wife was Helen Michelle McCloud. They had no children.

Dillie, daughter of John Harrison and Mary Frances, married Vandy Gramling. She lived in Riddle's Bend, Etowah County, Alabama, before she married, across from the Heald's House at Canoe Creek and rode a horse to church in Riddle's Bend. She was acquainted with the Heald's as a child. Vandy and Dillie's children were: Willard D., married Grace; J.D., married Dorothy; Pete, married Jo Ann; Lucelle, married George; and Doland, married Yvonne.

Most of this information was told to Lloyd Heald by Dillie Gattis Gramling who had a good memory at the age of 89 in 1983.

I've told about the Gattis family, but the Gattis family as I know it wouldn't be complete without a discussion of Mammie's family, the Coin's. Mammie was Walker's wife, Joe's mother and Josee's Grandmother.

In the account of Tennessee history "Goodspeed", page 1242, is reported to be Hugh Coin, son and possibly grandson also named Hugh Coin. Hugh Coin came over shortly after the American Revolution. The one child I know of was Walter Didymus Coin, born 1810. Eliza Jane Davis, born 1809 in NC, married Walter Didymus Coin on November 18, 1833 in Rogersville, Hawkins County, TN. Walter D. Coin, died March 12, 1878, in Whitesides, Marion County, TN and is buried in Tunnel Hill Cemetery.

In the 1840 Census, Walter D. Coin was found in Grainger County, TN, born in VA. He was old enough to be the father of Walter E., but the wife was too young. This may been a seconnd wife. Finally, found in the order of Coin families from Sistler, Walter E., spelled Cohen in Dade County, GA. In 1870, it was spelled Cowin in Marion County, TN and in 1880, the widow's name was spelled Coin.

The ten children of Walter Didymus and Eliza Jane Davis Coin are:

1. James Coin, born Sept. 29, 1834, McMinn County, TN 2. Samuel Coin, born Jan. 2, 1836, McMinn County, TN 3. Nancy Coin, born Nov. 17, 1837, McMinn County, TN 4. Sarah Emiline Coin, born Mar. 1, 1857, Monroe County, TN

Samuel Coin, number 2 above, married Mary Elizabeth Hilburn, born Jan. 2, 1836 in McMinn County, TN. Their ten children: John Rily, married Mary Ann Johnson; Robert E. Lee, married Sarah; Sarah, died age 14, buried at McCauley's Chapel, Gadsden, Alabama; Louisa Jane "Liddy", married Thomas Wilder; William Thomas, married 1st Sarah Murray, 2nd Sarah Elizabeth Bryant Gattis who was born Nov. 6; Eva married John Spinks; Charles married Bessie Mae Nelson; Luther Didymus, born Feb. 24, 1884, died Feb. 11, 1963, married Willie Ezma Hollaway on Nov. 10, 1907. William Thomas Coin had all his children by Sarah Murray. The only child I'm aware of is Mammie Ruth Coin, the wife of Walker Gattis, the mother of Joe Gattis, and the grandmother of Josee Gattis.

Luther Didymus Coin, son of Samuel and Mary Hilburn, married Willie Ezma Hollaway, Nov. 10, 1907, Etowah County, Alabama and they had seven children: Samuel Richard, born Oct. 4, 1908, Etowah County, Alabama, married Mildred Hall on Oct. 20, 1934, she was born Jun. 6, 1914; Trixie Iris, born Jan. 1, 1911, married Burt Gattis on Jan 14, 1935, died May 1937; Mary Louise, born Nov. 22, 1913, married Wiley B. Their five children were; Lawrence Wayne; Richard Eugene; Sammye Faye, born Nov. 5, 1937, married 1st Jun. 3, 1961 to Gerald Keenan, married 2nd to Lloyd E. Source of information: Family Bible owned by Walter E. Coin and Eliza Jane Davis Coin of Marion County, TN. The bible was given to Thomas Triplet Coin about 1890, by his mother and given to Thomas Triplet Coin's daughter, Grace Coin Duncan of Birmingham, Alabama. The information about Walter Didymus Coin was copied from diary of Anne Keef Johnnson Minneck 1895-1900's, who was daughter of Mary Jane Coin Keef, sent by her daughter Lula Mae Graves to Gerry Moyle.

Most importantly, I want to thank Lloyd and Sammye Coin Heald, 205 Sherwood Drive in Gadsden. Without the information they passed on to me, this wouldn't be possible. Thank you very much!

Happy 17th Birthday and every birthday after that the Lord blesses you with, my darling daughter! I pray you have a happy, successful life in the Lord. There is nothing else I could pray for you.

This is a present to all of Joe's children: Darlene, Eugene, Cathy, Steve, Gary, Jeff, Josee and their families. May peace, happiness, and love in the Lord be with you always.
