CHAPPELL PAGE

My line in America begins with Captain John Chappell of London, owner and master of the Speedwell. The Speedwell was sister ship to the Mayflower. The ship developed leaks and couldn't make that voyage. The Speedwell did sail May 28, 1635 from Southampton for the colony of Virginia.

John's son, Thomas Sr., sailed June 23, 1635 at the age of 23 to Virginia aboard the America. William Barker was master of the ship. Mary Barker was John's wife and Thomas' mother. The America sailed from Gravesend, England and reached the mouth of the James River around August 1, 1635. They proceeded directly up river to cast anchor at JAMESTOWN because of the law forbidding the breaking of bulk before reaching there.

Thomas went on about 30 miles up river, and located on the south side in CHARLES CITY COUNTY, opposite WESTOVER, and at the mouth of a creek which was called "CHAPPELL'S CREEK", named for him. (Souces of Documentation available upon request.) His wife's name has not been discovered.

Thomas Chappell Jr. had only two children of whom we can find any trace, the little daughter to whom the legacy was bequeathed by Lieutenant Banister (possibly her grandfather), and a son named THOMAS. Mary Banister was his wife.

Thomas Chappell III was married to Elizabeth Jones, daughter of James Jones. The will of James Jones has been found naming descendants with Elizabeth Chappell named as widow of Thomas Chappell.

Samuel Chappell, before he left Prince George County, married Elizabeth, daughter of John Scott. At a court held for Surry county on November 21, 1749, a will of Samuel Chappell was presented by Elizabeth Chappell. The names of thirteen children are mentioned in the will-six daughters and seven sons. The mother of these children remained a widow. She left a will in Sussex County when she died. It was dated March 20, 1761 in which she left her estate to three sons and a daughter-Drury, Robert, John and Emelia, probably her youngest children.

After Elizabeth's death, John and Robert Chappell moved from Sussex County between 1762 and 1770 to Mecklenberg County, Virginia and then on to Granville, North Carolina. Robert died here and his family moved along with John and his family to Hancock County, Georgia. John died in Hancock County, leaving a will naming his wife, Nancy Harrison and his children. I have gotten a copy of John Chappell's will filed in Hancock County from the State Archives in Atlanta. I'm trying to finnd out if he fought in the Revolution.

John Chappell, son of John and Nanny Chappell, originally of Sussex County, Virginia, was probably born in Granville County, North Carolina, about 1774. He immigrated to Georgia with his father and brothers about 1785, where he settled in what became Hancock County. From that county he relocated in Talbot County where he died July 20, 1840, at the age of 66. He married Sarah Mathis on May 7, 1795 and had 11 children.

Robert Clark Chappell was whom I descend. He married Mary Elizabeth Kimbell on December 10, 1843 in Henry County, Georgia where he died February 22, 1890 at the age of 70. They had 9 children. I'm trying to find proof he was in the War Between The States. He had slaves and was of age to have been in the war. There was a significant space between the birth of his children during the time of the war. Mary moved with some of her children to Dekalb County, Alabama about the time of Bob's death.

James Albert Chappell was my great grandfather. He married Prudie Jane Adams. Her death certificate says she was born in Georgia and I think James was born in Henry County. I have found there was a family of Adams that lived close to the Chappells. I'm trying to find information on Prudie. The date I have on their marriage is 1887. Don't know where and I don't know exactly when. Family records were burnt, I was told. Prudie might have been Indian or her mother was. (See Adams & Denson Pages)

My grandfather was Henry Franklin Chappell. He was born in Etowah County, Alabama. He fought in World War I. My grandmother was Lessie Mary Elvira Phillips. They lived and died in Marshall County, Alabama.

My parents were Winford Honzel Holcomb and Joyce Elaine Chappell. My mother died in Etowah County, Alabama and my father was living in Etowah County at the time of his death.

If you're interested, I have more information, like childrens' names, locations, etc. Get in touch!! I'd like to share information with you!!!
