Nancy Ellen Bowling was the daughter of Bailey Bowling and Elizabeth Higginbotham. Ellen was born March 9, 1850 in Blount County, Alabama and died October 1905. She married John Calhoun Gillespie September 12, 1817 in Jefferson County, Alabama.

Bailey Bowling, Ellen's father, was born 1815 and died 1880-1900. He married Elizabeth Higginbotham in 1839. (They were first cousins.)

Bailey's parents were Henry Bowling and Mary Ann Higginbotham. Henry was born 1785 and died October 11, 1818 in Madison County, Alabama. They were married December 19, 1809.

Henry's parents were Jarret Wesley Bowling and Eleanor Garrison. Jarret was born January 18, 1762 in Stafford County, Virginia and died January 2, 1857. In Tazewell County Virginia, Jarret married Eleanor in 1781. After Eleanor's death, Jarret married Isabella Poague Goodwin. Jarret was a American Revolutionary War soldier.

Jarret's parents were Benjamin Bowling, Jr. and Winifred Garrison. Benjamin was born September 18, 1732 in Stafford Co, VA. (They were also first cousins.)

Benjamin Jr's parents were Benjamin Bowling, Sr. and Mary Latham. Benjamin was born 1696 in Stafford Co, VA. Mary was born 1701 and died December 5, 1735. Benjamin and Mary were married July 27, 1725 in St. Paul's Parrish in Stafford Co, VA.

Benjamin's father was Robert Bowling.
