I am a senior student at Trinity Western University in Langley and my thesis will be studying Garry Oak meadows. I will be studying 73 acres of property that TWU is currently leasing on Saltspring Island. I would love to have people contact me concernin preservation/restoration ideas or if they have any other important information I should have. Thanks.

Do you know if the trees behind the old Goodwill building on Bay Street are Garry Oaks? They may be threatened by construction plans.

It's my understanding that Garry Oak Meadows range from Comox to California, and that they are threatened throughout the region. Do preservation societies such as GOMPS exist in other parts of the realm?

Hi, whoever you are. Nice to see GOMPS promoted. As a former director who has worked very hard on preservation issues, I'm glad to see there are other people also concerned. Sometimes it seems we are only a handful. Actually, we are.

Just a footnote -- I tried to find some mention in the Vancouver Sun. Nada. Chek TV, however has a great website and you can actually download a good coverage of yesterday's executions. Considering the upcoming Earth Day celebrations, it is not surprising the the very Earth suddered (earthquake) on the day these old souls were cut down! For all of you Garry Oak lovers let me leave you with a poem. To plant a tree is an act of faith in the earth. An act of hope for the future An act of humanity towards coming generations Who will enjoy its fruits After we shall be gone. L. Mercier As for your website and some of the tooty commentaries -- let them do the same work first! Congratulations for having this site. Herb

I am absolutely appalled by Victoria's (read outraged) decision to cut down those three old souls to make way for a frigging parking lot. Add that to the city's continuing flushing of raw sewage into our straits will make it a cold day in hell before I vi it "Your Garden of Flowers." Garry Oaks may deal with all sorts of environmental, insect predations but the one thing they have not been able to do, it fight of the axman. Habitat reduction do to urban sprawl ... and traffic congestion suggests other alternatives rather than killing rees that were here before the America's were 'discovered' by the white man. Columbis-ized. (Curious lack of commentary by the Vancouver Sun as well!) Totally disgusted from the other side of the Straits. If Port Townsend, Sequim and Port Angeles have to clean their sewage I suggest Victoria (CAPITAL) city of B.C. do the same. And for the record, Sequim is doing one damn good job in preserving her Oaks! Three thumbs down Herbert Senft Sequim, WA

I have some Garry Oak seedlings in pots and they desparately need to be planted. Is there a location that is friendly to such a plan? I have tried asking local golf courses but to no avail. I believe their reasoning is that it grows too slowly for thei needs. Please E-mail your answer. Thanks.

We just bought 5 acres of broom (otherwise it's very nice) on Galiano Island and would like to plant garry oaks on some of it. I think we're too impatient (and too old) to just put some acorns in the ground and wait for them to grow. Does anyone know good places to get nursery stock, or about other methods of propagation?. . .Also, if anyone would like to contribute to this little reforestation project by helping us pull broom, feel free to contact us! By the way, do you think you can grow truffles under t em, or does that require a different kind of oak?

There is only 6 pages of text here at the most, and a quarter of that isn't even information related to Garry Oaks! Learn how to spell! Here are some questions and topics you should consider adding to your site:The History of the Garry Oak problem, proj cted plans for their future, government interaction i.e. plans for their rehabilitation, and considering you had to get involved for your project, you should consider telling us what you did to get involved! Where the hell is you bibliography! Nice backgroud on the guestbook page, reeeeeal tasteful! I am not pleased with your apparent lack of progress, and the emperor is not as forgiving as I am...
