Phra Sri Sakyamuni, Wat Suthat Thepwararam

Phra Sri Sakyamuni, the presiding Buddha image in Wihan
2. Phra Sri Sakyamuni
This is the presiding image in the Wihan, is in the attitude of Subduing Mara and cast in bronze. It is one of the largest metal images in Thailand with the finest characteristic of the Buddha. It originally presided in the grand Wihan at Wat Mahathat in Sukhothai which was established in A.D. 1362 King Rama I throught that to leave it to stand in the open air, the sun and rain would ruin it, so he had the image brought down-river to set up at this temple. In the lower front part of the throne of the image the ashes of King Rama VIII were placed on the 4th of April in A.D. 1950. Behind the throne there is a gilded stone-carving of the Dvaravati period, two and a half metres in height, portraying the Buddha performing the miracle at Sravasti and the Buddha preaching in the Tavatimsa Heaven. It is one of the temples masterpieces.
