1-5-94...Nice weather, still and Curt and dad play basketball after school.
1-6-94...Weather turns cold. Curt and dad go to Med Center. Dad to have his leg looked at and Curt for a blood count. Curt's blood count is low so he will have to stay home from school tomorrow. Dad calls Mrs. Bailey.
1-7-94...No school for Curt today.
1-8-94...We watch the Chiefs beat the Steelers then play basketball, later we hear that the Packers beat the Lions. Dad, Curt, Rodney, Krissy, Sarah, Abby and Sandy go to watch the Demons play Goodland. Curt sits with Rodney Miller, Joel Frederking, and Tanner Zimmerman. The Demon girls and boys both win big.
1-9-94...Too cold for basketball. Mrs. Walker called to ask about Curt and talked to dad quite awhile.
An illness seems to either bring two people closer or push them apart...Larry and I had neither the strength or desire to lean on each other...we chose to share our burdens on friends. Larry, the more willing in our relationship to talk...learned from my cues early on...I would not share my burden...my inability to share surfacing. Our crisis the same...but our coping abilities so different...laying so close to one another at night....but unable to touch or talk...it was like being a million miles from one another...separate but equal hells...
1-10-94...Weather mild and Curt has to stay home and plays basketball when dad gets home.
1-11-94...Mommy and Curt still home for the rest of the week. Since it is Dad's birthday, they make him a german chocolate cake.
1-12-94...Weather is mild and in the evening the whole family goes to watch the Conqs play basketball. The Civic Center is packed because the Famous Chicken performs all during the men's game.
Surreal moment...watching Curt the entire time...instead of the Famous Chicken. I did not have the capacity to find anything funny...I genuinely hated those who were laughing and having a good time....how could they laugh? at a time like this?...the lows....so low...trying to find the "switch" within myself that could turn off all feelings...
1-13-94...Curt has blood test and his WBC is still to low to return to school. Dad calls Mrs. Bailey and tells her of the situation. Curt gets new Nike Flights just like what the Demons and Conqs wear.
1-14-94... Weather turns a bit colder, so no basketball playing. Mommy, Dad, Curt, Krissy, Abby, Shelly, and Sandy go watch the Demons play Great Bend. The girls lose 46-42 and the boys win 74-42. Curt spends the game sitting and playing with Rodney Miller and Joel Frederking. After school Curt took math test.
You grab control where you can. You want to buy anything and everything....the thought crossed my mind...'is this the last pair of shoes I'll ever get to buy for Curt? Is this the last time he will take a math test?'....Larry's control came with going and doing any possible thing with Curt...that Curt wanted to do...my control came with giving....anything he asked for....I made an effort to get...and the sooner the better.
1-15-94...Cold all day. Curt goes to Wal-Mart and grocery shopping with mommy. Mommy and Abby go to Hastings and get the movie Hocus-Pocus.
1-16-94...Temp. still pretty chilly; so stay indoors all day. Curt and mommy watch entire KC Chiefs game on TV. Both get all excited when Chiefs come from behind to win over Houston 28-20.
willing to act the part...and succeeding in fooling everyone...
1-17-94...After school today dad and Curt go to the Civic Center to watch the Red Demons practice basketball. We have a great time and Curt gets to join in the Demon huddle after practice.
1-20-94...Tournament of Champions time and Curt gets to be one of the towel boys and the Demons win big over Kingman. After the game Curt goes up to the locker room.
1-21-94...T.O.C. Curt is a towel boy again and goes to locker room after game. Demons come from 18 points behind to beat Wichita East.
1-22-94...T.O.C., Curt towel boy but Demons lose to KC Schlagle in Championship game.
1-23-94...Grandma and Grandpa come and K.C. Chiefs get clobbered by Buffalo.
1-24-94...Mommy sends Curts MRI's and Medical info to Dr. Jeffery Wisoff in New York City. Also all info is sent to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota.
1-27-94...Dr. Groover calls from Mayo Clinic and says he would operate on Curt's tumor.
1-28-94...Dr. Jeffery Wisoff calls twice and says he can remove 80 to 90% of tumor with a 5-10% risk of any damage. Mommy and Dad decide to head for New York City. Grandpa Hubbard buys airline tickets and we are set to go.
Simple entries...complicated circumstances. Both Dr.'s contacted me at work...Wisoff not calling until all arrangements had been made to go to Minnesota...it just felt right...to choose NY...and Dr. Jeff.
