Lizards of the Rainforest

There are many different types of lizards that live in the rainforest such as iguanas, geckos, chameleons and water dragons. The basilisk lizard is very interesting because it can sprint across water, the chameleon can alter its colours to become camouflaged against a background and there are even lizards that can "fly" by stretching out flaps of skin and gliding between trees.

Probably the best know lizard of the rainforest is the iguana, seen on the right, especially since it is popular as a pet. The iguana can be found in all areas of the rainforest. It is an excellent swimmer and will plunge into water when it feels threatened.
The iguana lays eggs to reproduce and their young generally forage on the forest floor eating invertibrates such as insects, worms and snail. Adults feed mostly on plants but occassionally will catch small mammals. Iguanas are actually eaten in various countries and they are considered a delicacy by many.

The Gecko lives in the rainforest as well and they have many adaptations that are excellent for living in the rainforest. For one thing the gecko's feet has ridges on the base so that it can climb straight up trees and even upside down across ceilings. Some geckos even have prehensile tails so that they can grasp branches and other objects.
Geckos are mostly active at night so they do not have bright coloured skin although geckos that are active during the day have brighter colours.
Most geckos eat insects but there are some species that will eat small mammals and birds and others feed on nectar. Geckos are reallt beneficial because they eat a variety of insects as well as cockroach eggs.
