Outdoor Alternatives was originally called the Citizens in Training Program when it began in the summer of 1994. It was designed to provide an alternative to detention at state facilities for juveniles adjudicated before the court Juveniles learn outdoor skills at GPC that they take home with them to develop interests in wholesome outdoor pursuits. A decent alternative to less wholesome delinquent behavior. Youth taking part in the Outdoor Alternatives Program met for one week in the summer, one weekend a month through the fall, a week during February break, and one weekend a month till year end. Outdoor Alternatives challenges developed :problem solving ability, teamwork, cooperation, self esteem, responsibility, a sense of achievement, interdependence, and trust. All activities were led by Registered Maine Guides and Camp Trip Leaders certified by Maine Dept. of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. Staff were also certified as Maine Hunter, Boating, and Snowmobile Safety Instructors and, American Red Cross First Responders, and Lifeguards.
