Croatian ornitologyst analises White Stork population

The Stork has been trying to adapt to modern civilization

The Storks in Croatia

Situation in figures:

There are approximately 1500 white stork couples nesting in Croatia (Ciconia Ciconia).

The area of nesting:

The nesting area stretches within the continental part of the country including the villages along the banks of the rivers Sava, Drava, Denube and their tributaires.

Places chosen for nesting:

The most white storks' nests (57 %) are made on the roofs of the houses and farm buildings (stables, cowsheds etc). On the electrical poles nests have been made by 26% of the stork population. There are about 13% of nests on the chimneys, and 4% in the trees.

Population trend:

The white stork population in Croatia show the stable trend in the time period 1984.-1994. / 95.

Populaton density:

In the nesting area the population density (stD) is 5,8 pairs at 100 km.

The european village of white storks:

The village Čigoč within the area of the Nature Park Lonjsko polje was declared on 26 june 1994. to be the first European village of white storks as it has the greatest number of stork pairs (about 50).

Croatia intergrated in the international census:

Croatia has been taking part in international process of counting white stork pairs and their young which is organized in Europe every ten years. For the first time in Croatia counting was done in 1984, and the last one in the 1994 / 95.
Some of the problems confronting the white storks: the grown up storks and their young nesting on the electrical poles are exposed to the danger of the crashing into the cables during nesting activities. The grown up storks are mostly endangered of the electric shock in spring while fighting for a nest.

Protection of the white stork:

Within the scope of various projects, actions and initiations the problem of nesting on the electricity poles is solved by putting natural nests up on the platforms. Platforms are put on the poles above the cables, only on the poles where the pair of storks made it. The first organized putting of prepared platforms was done in the vilages of Varaždin county in 1995. For that project Dr. Jasmina Mužinić was awarded a " Hrvoje Pozar " prize in the category of protecting the environment connected to power resources which is annual reward by Hrvatsko energetsko društvo. The organized removing of the white storks' nests is done in co-operation of the ornitology experts and " Hrvatska elektroprivreda " which supports the action with machinery (crane with hydraulic lift and crane with the workers' basket). For removing the nest from the pole, or chimney or the roof of the building in Croata a specially designed ring for such technical action (removing the nest without damaging it) is used.

For the ideological project of changing the places of nests without any damage by the means of ring Dr Jasmina Mužinić is the winner of the prize for the achievments in ecology in " Protection of biological and enviromental diversity " in 1996 which is the annual award of State Ecology Department (Državna uprava za zaštitu okoliša) that invention is supposed to be recognized by the State Inovation Department (državni zavod za patente).
