LIKAS WETLAND WHICH IS ALSO KNOWN AS LIKAS LAGOON

I THINK ! I THINK ! I SAW THE LIKAS LAGOON !!!!

The State Government has decided to gazette the 50-acre wetland in Likas as a bird sanctuary. The decision was made after the World Wild Fund for Nature Malaysia (WWFM) and the Asian Wetland Bureau officially submitted their respective reports to Chief Minister Datuk Yong Teck Lee for consideration at a meeting on Thursday 26 September 1996. The Sabah wildlife Department has been appointed to undertake the project whereby a special committee will be set up to assist in implementation.

The lagoon is approximately 4km north-east of main centre of Kota Kinabalu at the foot of Signal Hill and is about 10 minutes drive fron the town proper. It is surrounded by 13 local schools, adjacent to the Likas Sports Complex and about 500 meters to the east of Likas Bay on the coastal road from Kota Kinabalu.

The Tourism and Environment Ministry has requested RM3.1 million from the State Government for the planned bird sanctuary. The Likas lagoon is presently hosting some 60 kinds of birds of local and migratory birds apart from other insects. The most popular among the migratory birds that call at the spot are the egrets, that are commom in Vietnam and China.
