K K CITY BILL PASSED

The State Assembly had passed the Kota Kinabalu City Enactment Bill.

Tabling the Kota Kinablau City Enactment Bill, Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Lajim Ukin said the Enactment contained provisions relating to the appointment of a Mayor and his power, the setting of an Advisory Board, the role of the Chief Minister and the function of the city next year. According to him, the Mayor would be appointed by the Head of the State, who is also empowered to revoke the appointment without having to back with reasons.

He said the Enactment also provided for the setting up of an Advisory Board to give the Chief Minister power to issue instructions to the Mayor and the transfer of the present staff of Municipal Council to the Kota Kinabalu City Council. The existing laws would continue to be used by the City Council unless they are amended or revoked by the Mayor, and the licences and permits issued by th KKMC would be deemed valid even after KK becomes a city.
