Enter at the Margaret Hames Nature Center.Margaret Hames Nature Center Maps are available. When only one ranger is on duty, the Center may be closed a while during he/she is patrolling.



This tour of the sanctuary might take from 45 minutes at a fast walk (jogging is prohibited on the boardwalk) to 2 hours, 30 minutes for nature viewing strolls. Distances below are approximate. You might like to print this guide to take along, to add your notes, and to see more in the sanctuary.

At the Canoe Deck, Note the sign, Save the Manatee Club (1-800-432-JOIN), (1-800-DIAL-FMP) to report injured or harassed manatees. The Turtle Coast Group of the Sierra Club has adopted the creek area to keep clean. Canoe outings are held to retrieve trash under the Adopt-a-shore Litter Control Commitment. The recently constructed roof over the decking is welcome in the rainy season.

The boardwalk crosses the old utility lines route. A short walk to the left (west) would take you off the boardwalk to the flood control dam and McKinnons Way Nature Trail.

End of the boardwalk at "The Treehouse", which isn't there any more. The creek is in sight to the south. The rest bench is a good place to bird watch. Notice the resurrection ferns and bromeliads that abound in this area.
