ASSIGNMENT NO.2

1. Hope by now that you all have gotten used to this internet and e-mail stuff. Assignment #2 is to introduce you to basic stuff on the Internet--use of NETSEARCH and how to open a file with a http#.
2. Get into NETSCAPE and go to OPEN and type http://1912.history.ohio-state.edu/Conservation/gifford_pinchot.htm. Do three things:
(1) Write a brief biographical background (where from, DOB, etc.)
(2) Statement of his philosophy of resource use
(3) List his government posts
3. Go to Gifford Pinchot National Forest and click. (http is: http://www.fs.fed.us/gpnf/) Then, click on Introduction anfd General Description. Answer the following:
(1) Where is Gifford Pinchot National Forest located, how many acres, and what volcano is there?
(2) What was Pinchot's principle that guided national forest management?
(3) Go back to Gifford Pinchot National Forest and look over its home page and click on one of the topics. In a paragraph or two tell what you found?
4. Go back to net search and type in any individual of your choice who were the educated, urban vanguards of the conservation movement (Rachel Carson, Jethro Tull, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Aldo Leopold, Theodore Roosevelt, John James Audubon, John Bartram, John Wesley Powell, and others in your textbook) and find a site and do the following:
(1) Identify individual you choose and identify site with http #
(2) Briefly summarize individual and what he did in a nutshell
(3) Relate person to concepts discussed in class, especially to this vanguard thing.
5. Free to roam here. Go to any search topic you want. For example, type in Georgia Wilderness Areas, Wilderness Act, Endangered Species, GORP (Rec majors), U.S. Forest Service, Conservation, Civilian Conservation Corps, Dust Bowl, Passenger Pigeon, whitetailed deer, Wild Turkeys, Duck's Unlimited, etc, etc, etc,
(1) What did you find and a statement about its significance to conservation.
