ASSIGNMENT NO. 17

Return to Good's Page.

In this assignment you will learn how to do some neat tricks with your homepage again. Remember, follow the instructions carefullyŠ

Go to Netscape and click on Netsearch and type in a topic that we may or may not have discussed in chapter 8. You might choose Canada, environmental problems, urban and rural landscapes, natural resources, etc. Pick 5. Do the usual: Write down the address and title, summarize it, and relate to discussions in class. Also, go to three other sites that I have chosen and do the same for them. The addresses are http://www-ks.cr.usgs.gov/ , http://www.nps.gov/planning/elca/elca.html , and http://www.overland.net/~tmjagger/camino.html These are all good and interesting sites. All total, you should have 8 summaries and titles. E-mail your responses to dangood@gsvms2.cc.gasou.edu

Now for the fun part.

GO TO your e-mail account and log-in as usual and then type cd public_html to get to your file with the homepage stuff in it. At the next $ prompt type pico index.html

This homepage assignment will teach you how to use commands on your page to make it "jump". The commands we will use are XXX and

Usually (you can see Dr. Good¹s page to see how this works exactly) these commands are used to give the viewer quicker access to various topics without having to scroll through the entire document looking for one thing.

We will do this to the 8 articles you summarized.

Getting started: Pick a place on your page (preferably near the top) to put somewhat of an index. You can use a format or not. It¹s up to you.

First, use the command to put a link on your page. The "xxx" part is usually just a quick and easy two, three, four, etc. letter sequence that lets you know what that link is. For instance, most weather pages have links that end in "swx" or "wx". Whatever you want to use is fine.

Type Your Title
(where br= break) so that you leave spaces between links. Type in all 8 here in whatever order or format you want. Have the addresses handy because we will begin typing those in next.

Now scroll down the screen using the arrow keys (can¹t use a mouse in e-mail or pico) and find a place that you want to put the links to your sites. Doesn¹t matter where. Could be in the middle or way down at the bottom.

The function does just what it says. You tell it to look for a specific name (A HREF) and it tells it where to go to find that name (A NAME).

Now, type in
so that there is a space between your links. Do not use the # sign in the A NAME function. Now, directly beneath or beside this command, type in your link. Remember to make it clickable by using the command. Let¹s see what you¹ve got so farŠ
