MemoServ

MemoServ is the part of services that allows registered (to NickServ) users to send memo's to other registered users, which brings us to its name of Message Sending Services. Memo's are a very useful tool for sending a short message (up to 255 characters) to a user. The user needn't be online at the time. MemoServ will store your memo and inform the intended recipient that a memo is waiting for them the next time they log on using that nickname.

Sending Memo's

To send a memo, firstly your nickname must be registered, see my NickServ pages for help to register a nickname. The user you wish to send the memo to must also have their nickname registered. To send a memo use the following command:

/ms SEND {nickname} {memo/msg text}

You will get a notice back from MemoServ stating the memo was sent successfully, and how long till it is saved to its database. If services crashes before it is saved then it actually doesn't get sent and you'll need to resend the memo.

Listing Memo's Being Held

Sometimes many memo's are sent to you. When you first log on MemoServ will in form you you have memo's. You should do a list command especially if you haven't deleted old memo's, to see which is the new memo. To do this type:

/ms LIST

All new memo's are marked with an asterisk (*). You'll see something like:

-MemoServ- *1 Aysmonte Sun 11/09/97 18:02:23 PST

MemoServ also adds a date and time the memo was sent.

Reading Memo's

Once you have a list of what memo's need to be read or re-read. Type:

/ms READ {memo number}

MemoServ will then send you the memo you requested.

Deleting Old Memo's

Once you have read your memo's and no longer require them, you have a couple of options available to you to delete them....

If you wish to delete all of your memo's and purge them from MemoServ then type the following:

/ms DEL ALL

MemoServ will send a notice back saying all memo's have been deleted and purged. If you only wish to delete one memo and leave the rest you would use the command:

/ms DEL {memo_number}

MemoServ will then mark this memo for deletion, when it's next purge cycle comes along it will delete any memo's set to be deleted. If you wish to expedite this procedure you would use the purge command:

/ms PURGE

Please note that once a PURGE or a DEL ALL command has been issued it is unreversable. The only way your memo's will survive is if services crashes before saving changes to its database.

Recovering Deleted Memo's

If for whatever reason you find you've deleted a memo by accident. Using the /ms DEL {number} command then you can unset the deleted flag with the following command:

/ms UNDEL {memo_number}

This will put its flag back to normal and MemoServ won't delete it if issued the PURGE command.

Forwarding Memo's

MemoServ can even forward memo's automatically to other nicknames you may have registered. You need to know however the NickServ password of the nick to be forwarded to for MemoServ to allow you set a forwarding flag. The command to forward memo's automatically is:

/ms FORWARD {nickname} {nickname's_NickServ_password}

To check if forwarding is working on the nickname, change to that nick, and issue the following command to MemoServ:

/ms FORWARD

MemoServ will inform you if it is forwarding memo's and if so to which nickname. To remove a forward you have setup use this command:

/ms FORWARD -

MemoServ will then inform you that forwarding has been stopped.

Other Commands to Note

One final command you should be aware of is the NickServ command NOMEMO.

/ns SET NOMEMO [ON|OFF]
