How to Become More Effective Activists
- Attracting Others to Our Cause>
From Artemisd123@hotmail.com
At
this month's Animal Rights (AR) Conference at American University in Washington,
D.C., several keynote speakers emphasized the need to build bridges to other
activist segments in order to expand the significance of the AR movement.
Consider what they said:
Ingrid Newkirk, President of PETA, stated that PETA has launched outreach
programs towards people of color;
Howard Lyman, President of EarthSave and author of "The Mad Cowboy"
and Pattrice- , Founder of The Global Coalition Against World Hunger,
emphasized the need to form coalitions with other groups seeking social justice.
I'll try to summarize what was said during the conference below:
When we succeed in helping others realize that animal justice is part of social
justice, we have come "full circle" in making the connection that all
life is part of the "interrelated web of existence" and deserves
equal protection and reverence accorded by ethical, moral and judicial
bodies. In the (paraphrased) words of Ingrid Newkirk, "when it comes
to pain, fear and loneliness, a dog is a rat is a pig is a boy."
TIPS FOR ATTRACTING OTHERS TO OUR CAUSE:
Please remember, Animal Rights (AR) doesn't stand in isolation by itself – but
fits into broader social issues: poverty, oppression at work, domestic
violence, public health, health delivery systems, nutrition and enough `food
for all,' anti-violence, etc., etc. Helping one is helping all – it's the
web of life. Help others to see the logical connection.
When talking to someone outside the AR movement, try to understand:
"What is the primary emergency/concern faced by this person?"
Is it hunger, poverty, racism, violence, helplessness, lack of healthcare,
abortion, etc. etc? Acknowledge their feelings, concerns; their
perspective. Quickly refer to the connection between their condition and
using animals in a cruel and unethical way. For example, are they
suffering from poor health and lack of healthcare? Quickly state that
billions are thrown away each year to "white coat welfare" schemes to
poison and injure animals in experiments that do not translate into human
health benefits; money that would be better spent providing health care to
humans in clinical settings. Are they concerned about racism or
oppression at home or at work? Briefly state how the system of oppression
begins with speciesism, or the oppression and exploitation of other animals by
those who have the power to do so; discuss the animal-human violence
connection. Are they hungry? Remind them that the animal-based diet
propagated by schools, governments and industry is expensive and harmful to
human health and the environment; plant-based nutrition conserves the earth,
protects the health of adults and children, is very affordable, and does not
torture and exploit other species. If someone is concerned about abortion (pro
or con), discuss the exploitation of farmed animals by forced impregnation to
produce offspring who are ripped away at birth for sale to auction houses and
school dissection programs.
WHEN SOMEONE SAYS:
When someone says, "Well why don't you spend your time helping
humans?" You can honestly say, "I am doing so by working in the
AR movement." And then discuss some of the connections mentioned
above. You might also want to say, "Well, I've never met an Animal
Rights activist who says you can't both help the animals and help other humans;
are you saying you don't see the connection?" (The idea is to put
THEM on the defensive, challenge them to think – meet their question by asking
THEM a question in return!) You might also want to ask, "Well, what do you
do for humans that prevents you from helping animals too?" (Usually
the person you're talking to doesn't do ANYTHING to help ANYONE…but that's
another subject…)
Howard Lyman reminds us that we all need to cultivate the patience and humility
to realize that what we say to another person is just ONE COAT OF PAINT.
Psychologists and educators say it takes 7 – 12 times of hearing something
before a person begins to "get it." You may be person #4 to say
something to this person about Animal Rights (AR). Don't try to put on
all 12 coats of paint at one time: you don't want to turn the person off
all together. Be gentle, direct and humble; leave the door open enough
for the next person to come along to apply another coat of paint by speaking
more of the truth about AR. We need to pray for each other (or send
positive energy; whatever makes sense to your view of the universe.)

Making Ice Cream & Butter
By Robert Cohen - i4crob@earthlink.net
http://www.notmilk.com
Last week, while dining in a Chinese restaurant,
I watched a child swirl chocolate and strawberry ice cream together into a wet
sludge, which soon melted into a thick liquid. Her parents were oblivious to
the child's game, but I was inspired.
Liquid ice cream tastes just like frozen ice cream, and that is the secret to
making the perfect dessert. Simply work backwards.
Yesterday, I decided to apply theory to culinary excellence. I went to the
Target store in Hackensack, New Jersey, and invested $34.99 and purchased the
cheapest and simplest ice cream maker I could find, a 1.5 quart model made by
Rival.
There are few moving parts in the machine. I had to pre-freeze the mixing bowl.
No rock salt is necessary.
I began with six cents of homemade soymilk, one and one-half quarts, a
container of environmentally friendly chocolate (no slave labor), and maple
syrup.
I called Lizzy to be my mixer, and we soon created a liquid that tasted just
like melted chocolate ice cream. This was not scientific, and the actual
recipe was lost, but it will be easy to re-create. I believe that we added
three heaping tablespoons of vegan chocolate powder and sweetened the liquid
with maple syrup until it tasted just right.
We shook the liquid in a large jar until the chocolate powder had dissolved,
then poured the mixture into our ice cream machine. Lizzy pushed the button,
and eight minutes later we had perfect chocolate soy ice cream. Lizzy ate
her fill, then froze the rest.
Hours later, the soy ice cream was as hard as a rock. We talked about
this, and decided that we never want to add artificial stabilizers and
emulsifiers to our foods like they do in factories. It's always better to make
things fresh.
Today, Lizzy and I will be visiting our local gourmet produce store.
Strawberries may be out of season, but our Korean produce man carries large
ripe berries that are to die for. We'll be making strawberry ice cream for
tonight's dessert.
Lizzy asked if we could buy a container of chocolate syrup. That's just not
necessary. One can add sugar and chocolate powder to soymilk, and produce a thick
chocolate syrup that is indistinguishable from any store brand.
Whipped cream? Yep. This is not diet food, folks. Normal whipped cream is
loaded with fat, and one consumes plenty of calories with each dollop of cream,
but here's how we make our sinfully delicious homemade whipped cream.
We first make soy butter.
INGREDIENTS
1 cup of cold soymilk
2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice
1 cup of safflower or sunflower oil
METHOD
Place the soymilk in a food processor and press the blend switch. The centrifugal
force will create a hole in the center. Slowly pour in the oil in a steady
stream, and when the hole closes, add the lemon juice. Refrigerate.
To make the whipped cream
INGREDIENTS
8 tablespoons of soy butter
2 tablespoons of soymilk
One-half cup of maple syrup
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
METHOD
Blend chilled soy butter in a food processor. Gradually add maple syrup
and whip until it Turns fluffy white. Add soymilk and vanilla and Blend well
until it resembles whipped cream. Freeze.
You can use store-bought soymilk, but it gets expensive. We make our soymilk in
the Soytoy.
http://www.SoyToy.com
If you do not have a SoyToy, visit an Asian market (Chinese, Korean, or
Japanese) and buy the freshest soymilk you can find. Unlike products found in
most supermarkets, these soymilks contain no artificial preservatives,
stabilizers, or flavor enhancers. Homemade or freshly made soymilk will also
contain fiber, unlike brands like SILK which contain no fiber, robbing you of
the full range of nutrients contained in the soy bean.
Do you need a SoyToy? Of course not, but this machine soon pays for itself.
Each time you spend $2 for a quart of soymilk, remember that you can be making
your own for just four cents.

Killing Animals For Olympics
Source: Herald Sun 2/24/02
HELENA
SMITH in ATHENS:
Animal lovers are up in arms over claims the Greek Government is using poison
to rid the country of an estimated 200,000 stray dogs.
Animal welfare groups fear the Government, in a bid to clean up the streets of
Athens for the 2004 Olympic Games, is laying poison through the streets.
The controversy erupted as it emerged Chinese students on Cyprus have been
eating stray dogs. Arguing that canine cuisine is a delicacy, the students this
week admitted snatching scores of dogs from the streets in a bid to spice up
their diet.
The poison claims emerged after reports from tourists enraged at the sight of
what appeared to be officials laying bait.
"Every country has problems with strays, but Greece is much worse,"
said Joy Leney, of the London-based World Society of the Protection of Animals
(WSPA). "What is happening there
is very, very worrying," she said. "Humane controls are called for,
not poisoning, shooting and clubbing. "We are very afraid the situation
will worsen in the run-up to the 2004 Olympic Games."
Concern at the fate of the strays -- estimated at 50,000 in Athens alone -- has
prompted animal welfare agencies to call for legislation for the registration
of animals with electronic microchips and fines for owners of abandoned pets.
"Greece has drafted legislation, but it's very thin on specifics,"
said Ms Leney, who visited Athens with a WSPA team this month. Greeks routinely
kill unwanted cats and dogs by lacing pet food with pesticides. In rural areas,
where attitudes to animals are even harsher, dogs are frequently hung from
trees and power poles and old donkeys thrown from cliffs.

New Fight Against Puppymills
From leigh13@ix.netcom.com email
After
having dinner with my 2 vets the other night and complaining endlessly about
the sick puppymill dogs at the petstores...here is what I have come to find....
IF you get a sick, inbred, deformed, ill or problem puppy...
1. you must immediately find out who the vet is who signed off on the
dogs health. Not only the vet who signed off on them from WHERE they were
SENT... BUT ALSO THE VET WHO DID THEIR HEALTH check AT THE STORE level. This is
all documented on the paperwork - the vets name...and most of the time the
petstores will refer any illness back to the vet who did the initial glance
over....so now you have his/her name, number and address. I'm sure you can
request the name of the vet from the state in which they came from too. Or you
can call the "private breeder" and get the info since they provide
all that documentation so "willingly".
2. You must then make a formal and written complaint to BOTH the vet
boards from which they came AND YOUR STATE Vet Board.
These vet boards are very connected and almost (it sounds) enjoy investigating
other in order to destroy them, put them on probation, revoke their license
etc... Hey - its more business for them right? Less vets? more business = more
money.
My vets tell me that one little innocent person writing a half ass letter to
the Board of Vets from the State is enough to create a ton of problems for that
vet. The board will launch an investigation...apparently they come into
the clinic and inspect everything from top to bottom...they want to see
paperwork, protocols, procedures, guidelines and medicines. By a vet signing
off on the health of a pet - they are ULTIMATELY responsible for that pet if it
dies. So NOW, the person who bought the puppy can basically turn around and sue
BOTH the petstore AND the stores vet.
A couple of these pain in the ass reports, investigations and problems for the
clinic/vet...is enough to make a vet RUN from these stores and never work with
them again!
Since each puppy MUST by FEDERAL LAW come with a health certificate....and have
a health certificate from the store....by canceling out the underhanded,
sleazy vets who are making a quick buck off the suffering of the petstore
puppies.... these petstores won't have any vets to work with them. Because
those vets who DO care and would never work with a petstore STILL won't work
with them..its not much money and its not worth their time or effort...they already
have established practices and THEY already know they'd be responsible for
these puppies some where down the line!
I called a local vet here in our area and told him point blank... "I know
you work with the petstores and mills and sign off on their health
certificates...you will never get MY business, and I will never refer ANY of
the 4000+ adopters from MY shelter to YOU. Furthermore, I will make sure
that every other shelter and rescue within 100 miles is aware of this and they,
too, will follow us with our beliefs." I continued on about how these
sleazy stores are continually selling the sick ones that he DIDN'T sign off on
and the dogs that are even checked off on their papers as NOT SALABLE. People
are STILL paying top dollar for them! HELLO!!!!
Anyway, it may be a small start but there usually is only a couple vets in a
WIDE area that cover DOZENS if not HUNDREDS of petstores alone....so - you
start making complaints to the Vet Board that they are signing off on sick dogs
and YOU want to know what's going on! How could the board POSSIBLY ALLOW these
vets to do this????
These Boards are nasty, nasty troublesome headaches to the vet on the receiving
end.
So if we can't get them headon....lets go around to the backdoor and take down
their supporters!
Please post this far and wide...and make sure that anyone involved in rescue,
shelters, and closing petstores/puppymills are aware of this.
99.9% of the time NO ONE knows where to complain to when they get a sick
puppy...this might start turning things upside down. Start flooding the State
vet boards with complaints...they won't know what to do with themselves now!
Now something like this would NEVER affect ANY vet who is properly doing
his/her job..or a vet who is in good standing with the vet board....but this
will be designed to target those vets who are into it for the money and don't
care about the health and welfare of the pets they are carrying for.
This is not designed to be a lynch mob...but simply to stop sick puppies and
petstores from selling them...and to hold those accountable for allowing it....

World Day Of Action Against
Seal Hunts
TUESDAY, MARCH 12TH, 2002
From Sandra Carlson - sjcarlson@shaw.ca
Up
to 700,000 seals are slaughtered in commercial seal hunts around the world each
year. This does not include seals caught in fishing nets, shot by
fishermen, and seals killed and not recovered. In Canada alone, the quota
for the annual seal hunt is 275,000 harp seals and 10,000 hooded seals - about
80% of the seals killed are less than one year old.
Footage of the hunt consistently shows that the methods of killing are cruel,
that there are many violations of the limited regulations that exist and
numerous other abuses not addressed by Canadian law. Video evidence has
shown just some examples: seals being skinned alive, others that are left
writhing in agony for several minutes after either being wounded by gunfire,
clubbed, or caught on sharpened steel hooks, and many clubbed to death with
illegal weapons.
GAASH (Global Action Against Seal Hunts) is a coalition of groups that has
formed to speak out against the commercial slaughter of seals in Canada,
Norway, Greenland, Russia, and Namibia. Our goal is to put an end to the
bloody slaughters through pressure on governments and tourism in these
countries.
Last year animal protection groups in thirteen countries participated with
demonstrations at embassies and consulates. Please help us to let the
governments of the sealing nations know that we want the slaughters to
stop! The Canadian seal hunt is due to begin in early March and we want
to show the Canadian government that people around the world are disgusted with
the bloodbath on the ice.
Tuesday, March 12th, 2002 marks the third annual World Day of Action Against
Seal Hunts. Organizations around the world will participate by
demonstrating at government offices and embassies, and tourist offices.
You can participate in this event in a number of ways - join a demo in your city,
write letters to government officials, or hand out leaflets on a busy street.

National Animal Disaster
Preparedness Day
From United Animal Nations - Abowman@uan.org
National
Animal Disaster Preparedness Day Is Saturday, May 18
“Don’t Leave Home Without Them”
SACRAMENTO (February 27) -- With the summer hurricane, tornado and wild land
fire season fast approaching, the United Animal Nations’ Emergency Animal
Rescue Service (EARS) program will host its third annual Animal Disaster
Preparedness Day on Saturday, May 18.
The goal of this nationwide event is to remind people that disasters pose a
life-threatening danger for animals, too, and that the family cat, dog, bird,
horse or any other animals being cared for need to be included in evacuation
plans. The theme of Animal Disaster Preparedness Day is “Don’t Leave Home
Without Them.”
Trained EARS volunteers have helped rescue, shelter and care for thousands of
animals in more than 45 disasters during the past 15 years. Many animals are
injured or killed during disasters every year because no one thought to include
them when planning for a disaster and there was no time to do so when disaster
struck.
WHAT: Animal Disaster Preparedness Day
WHEN: Saturday, May 18
ACTIVITIES: Nationwide distribution of free disaster preparedness
information kits for animals.
WHY: To help families be prepared to save their companion animals if disaster
strikes.
In recognition of Animal Disaster Preparedness Day, UAN is distributing free
Disaster Preparedness Information Kits for Animals to animal caregivers, animal
shelters and humane societies. The kits include a brochure with disaster
preparedness tips for animals, suggested “shopping lists” for animal disaster
supplies, a handout on how to create a family disaster plan and other disaster
planning information.
EARS is the disaster rescue program of Sacramento-based United Animal Nations.
To request a free Animal Disaster Preparedness Day Information Kit, contact UAN
at P.O. Box 188890, Sacramento, CA 95818, Tel: (916) 429-2457 or send an email
to info@uan.org.
Disaster preparedness information also is available on UAN’s website at www.uan.org/ears/adpd.html.
Disaster photos available upon request.

America the Beautiful?
By Donna Anderson - donna1994@delphi.com
With banners flying high
proud to be alive
Americans live their lives
without batting an eye
But locked tightly in their cages
are our animals of nature
Crying desperately in pain
as the vivisectionist jots statistics on his paper
Why must we show cruelty
to every living thing
We should be teaching our children to be peaceful
instead of how to sting
The very things that brought us life
you know as well as I
Are the animals we now torture
to put a dollar in the American pie !
