SHARK Takes a Bite Out of the
Wauconda Rodeo
from
SHARK - news@sharkonline.org
Like
a seasonal illness, the infamous annual Wauconda rodeo occurred again July
13-15, but not without a few hitches for the animal abusers, provided by SHARK.
Friday
and Saturday night, our Tiger video truck ruled outside the rodeo grounds! We knew we had really gotten to them when
the rodeo announcer started droning apologies to the crowd for the monstrous
movie screens moved back and forth, close to the attendees. As the Tiger lurked and crawled, Lake County
sheriff's deputies tried to figure out how to cite the Tiger for something -
anything - but in the end they wisely did nothing.
The
movie screens merely showed the truth about rodeo animal abuse, as well as past
undercover footage we shot of children being hurt at the Wauconda rodeo's sheep
riding event. In addition to animals,
the Wauconda rodeo drunks use and abuse children to get their kicks! The Tiger pushed that footage right in their
faces, and they couldn't stand the exposure.
The
rodeo company tried to block our video cameras with livestock trailers,
tractors, etc. We used our surveillance
cameras mounted on a telescoping pole, controlling the cameras through a
monitor on the ground. Our "pole
cams" peered right over the obstacles, and drove the rodeo losers
absolutely nuts as we documented even the fastest events. Better still, our pole cams now have the
ability to go wide angle or telescopic, and captured some very important
footage this weekend.
By
the end of the last day, the phony cowboys were at their wits end. One pickup pulled over on the highway, and
two testosterone-challenged stooges jumped out, acting as if they were going to
fight. When another male activist and I
dropped everything and started toward them with obvious
relish,
the thugs slowed their pace in order to allow police to "stop them"
before they got too close to us. As
usual, the thugs were not arrested for their threats, fighting words and
obscenities, but we will let the videotaped images expose these characters in
the coming months.
Speaking
of video images, we have one of an obviously frustrated "cowboy"
sticking his bare rear end out of a pickup.
Exactly what this buffoon was attempting to accomplish I cannot
say. However, I predict the results
will not be what he had hoped for. My
videocam got a good shot of the stooge's pasty rear, immediately followed by a
very nice close-up of the truck's Illinois license plate.
Lake
County State's Attorney Michael Waller is, and always has been a patsy for the
rodeo sponsors, but this video evidence is going to be difficult for even him
to ignore. Charges for indecent
exposure are obviously warranted.
However, if Waller does his usual routine of giving the rodeo a pass on
any and all violations, we shall show the footage around Lake County on the
Tiger -- especially at next year's rodeo.
We
documented numerous animal victims with flank strap wounds and more serious
injuries. One local journalist cornered
the rodeo producer and got him to say he would debate me on an upcoming radio
show. I say the bum will be a
no-show. If I am wrong, I promise it
will be a real
bucking
event. I'll be applying the spurs, and
the rodeo stooge will be doing the bucking.
There
was more that occurred, as Wauconda lived up to its nickname as the
"Hegins" of Illinois. One
thing I can promise -- there's a whole lot more to come down on Wauconda, Illinois. I will write more about it in our next
newsletter. If you want to be on our
regular mailing list, just let me know your snail mail address, and I'll add
you to it.

Author Sees Veganism Diet
As Key To Weight Control
by
Valerie Hernandez - Journal Sentinal staff
http://www.jsonline.com/alive/nutrition/jul01/vegan16071501.asp
Many
people lament that their weight is determined by genetics, so there's nothing
they can do about it. The first part of
that statement may be true. But
according to Neal Barnard, you can do something about your genes. Barnard is a physician who founded a group
called the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, which advocates a
dietary approach to health. He was in Milwaukee last week to promote his latest
book, "Turn Off the Fat Genes." Barnard asserts that, to some extent,
we can use nutrition and exercise to control genes relevant to weight gain. "You can't excise these genes, but you
can override them with food," said Barnard in an interview before a
scheduled appearance at the Milwaukee Public Library.
According
to Barnard and his organization, veganism (a diet based on beans, grains,
fruits and vegetables, but no dairy or meat) is the key. The absence of animal fat and the high fiber
content characterized by this diet help control genes crucial to appetite
control, fat storage, insulin resistance and fat burning. Barnard added that eating this way also will
help you dodge cancer and Type II diabetes, as these diseases often occur
together.
Data
from several studies support the contention that diet can influence whether
your genetics come into play. For example, the impact of dietary changes can be
observed in several immigrant populations. For example, Barnard stated that the
traditional Japanese diet is low in fat, easy on the meat and devoid of dairy.
However, once Japanese people immigrate to the United States, they often adopt
the Western diet - and unwittingly, the 'diseases of affluence,' such as
obesity. "They had the same genes
throughout their life. These genes were dormant until they added that food to
their systems," Barnard said. "Meat is not health food and cheese
does cause problems."
A
plant-based diet may be nutritionally sound, perhaps even life-saving. But is
it realistic in a state where many still worship the holy trinity of brats,
cheese and beer? Barnard thinks it is.
For one thing, Americans often ate "things like beans and bread"
before industrialization facilitated consumption of refined foods and made
formerly expensive foods such as meat more affordable. Additionally, he has observed that many
subjects in his studies transition fairly smoothly into a vegan diet and
actually find it difficult to resume eating fatty foods.
Barnard
mentioned a recent study he conducted at Georgetown University that
investigated weight loss in women consuming a vegan diet vs. women consuming
the American Heart Association's Step 2 Diet (i.e., less than 30% of calories
from fat and predominantly white meat such as fish and chicken). "We find that women didn't drop out
from the vegan group," Barnard stated.
"It's counterintuitive, because it's a Spartan diet. But they love
it! It tastes good, it's new. They're tired of eating chicken."
Furthermore,
Barnard believes concerns about other public health issues such as the
"mad cow" and foot-and-mouth diseases will make veganism more
prevalent. The signs are evident.
Veggie options abound in mainstream supermarkets. Barnard also noted that some Denny's restaurants
are
offering soy-based Boca Burgers. Boca Burgers were stocked in the White House
kitchen during the administration of President Clinton, fan of Le Big Mac. "It's the wave of the future," he
declared.

Rats, Mice & Birds
Putting Teeth Back Into The AWA
Source:
http://www.peta.org/alert/00/392.html
Last
year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) agreed to modify its definition
of the word "animal" so that rats, mice, and birds would finally be
covered under the Animal Welfare Act. This would affect more than 20 million
rats, mice, and birds, who comprise 95 percent of all animals used in labs each
year. However, in an attempt by the
animal-research industry to block this action, language has been included in
the FY 2002 Agriculture Appropriations bill denying the USDA the ability to
change the definition of "animal" in any regulations pertaining to
the Animal Welfare Act. Fortunately, Rep. George Miller made a statement on the
floor of the House demanding that this language be stricken in the final
version of the bill.
Please
do the following:
1)
Write a thank-you letter to Rep. George Miller for making his floor statement.
He'll no doubt be attacked by the animal-research industry, so we need to show
him how many people support what he did.

Swiss Find First Case of
"Mad Cat Disease"
From
Susan Gordon - veganvirago@home.com
ZURICH,
July 17 (Reuters) - A Swiss cat has been put down after it was found suffering
from an illness related to mad cow disease, the Swiss veterinary office said on
Tuesday.
The
office said it was the first case of feline spongiform encephalopathy (FSE) in
Switzerland, but in Britain, 90 cases of the brain-wasting illness, with
symptoms similar to mad cow disease, or BSE, are known. The first was
registered in 1990.
FSE,
which like bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cows leads to severe
disorders of the central nervous system, could spread to humans through cat
consumption, the office said.
"We
could only get the disease if we ate cats' brains," spokesman Heinz
Mueller told Swiss television, counseling people who eat cat to no longer do
so.
While
the exact cause of FSE is unknown, the Swiss assume the six-year-old cat ate
food containing animal brain tissue or bone marrow that was raw or
insufficiently heated.
"Swiss
cats are not in jeopardy," Mueller said, referring to a 1996 ban on the
use of brain and marrow tissue, or of recycled dead cats and dogs, in cat food.
Meat
and bone meal (MBM), a cheap source of protein made from ground-up remains of
livestock, is thought to transmit BSE, although experts say that as long as the
animals used in MBM did not have BSE, it is safe in cat and dog food.
The
Swiss office said that in various countries, big cats in zoos, like pumas,
tigers and lions, have been diagnosed with FSE.

Christian Vegetarian Association
from
Nathan Braun - braunn@hotmail.com
Announcing
the new Christian Vegetarian Association, an international ecumenical nonprofit
association of Christians promoting vegetarianism, as a way to witness to the
Christian message of love, compassion, and peace. CVA has developed an attractive new website (with powerful
collection of related resources) hosted by VegSource at ChristianVeg.com. This
website contains the entire contents of our groundbreaking brochure which
captures the essence of all matters "Christian and vegetarian,"
encapsulating them in "Questions and Answers About Vegetarianism for
Christians." We publish this
booklet as a part of our campaign focusing not on what the historical Jesus
actually (may or may not have) ate, but emphasizing instead "What Would
Jesus [NOT] Eat... Today?" (WWJE?). This provocative question is designed
to help facilitate critical Christian reflection on the subject, aided by the
condensed reflections of leading Christian theologians, philosophers, pastors,
and other ministering scholars. We
encourage everyone to take a look at our website to see its potential in
helping Christians understand how diet is related to spirituality and morality,
especially in light of the current negative effects of modern animal
agriculture as characterized by intensive "factory farming." I do not have to remind vegans and other AR
activists that these consequences include but are not limited to human health
hazards, wastefulness and other elements of environmental destructiveness as
well as of course, animal
mistreatment.
Please
be aware that the Christian gospel can never be justifiably invoked to support
injustices such as oppression and subjugation: "He came to set the
captives free!" It seems that in
some (AR) circles at least this is a widespread misconception: that a religious
philosophy can be condemned by the actions of adherents which are inconsistent
with any coherent or otherwise consistent interpretation and therefore practice
of that religion/philosophy. Information (such as free copies of our brochure,
bulk orders 14c apiece) can be obtained by emailing cva@christianveg.com and/or
writing to our Medical Director, Dr. Stephen Kaufman, CVA, P.O. Box 201791,
Cleveland, OH, USA, 44120; phone/fax 216-283-6702. We are international but are based primarily in the U.S., Canada
and the U.K. at present.

Export Ban Forces Cull of 2
Million Healthy Lambs
By
David Harrison, Environment Correspondent
http://www.unknownnews.net/
TWO
million healthy British lambs bred for the foreign market are to be slaughtered
and destroyed in the next few weeks because of the ban on exports caused by the
foot and mouth crisis.
A
"Buy British Lamb" campaign will be launched in an attempt to
encourage retailers and shoppers to buy the home-produced meat, but farming and
government officials agree that this will have little impact and that the
unprecedented destruction of the lambs is the only solution.
The
lambs would be killed with a bolt fired into their heads. Unlike with most of
the foot and mouth livestock, the shooting would not take place on farms, but
at abattoirs.
Farmers
said that the mass slaughter was a "devastating blow," but insisted
that it was necessary to avoid "massive welfare problems." The Soil
Association, which campaigns against intensive farming, said: "A lot of
people will find the large-scale destruction of healthy lambs for purely
financial reasons hard to stomach."
Kevin
Pearce, the head of livestock for the National Farmers' Union, said: "The last thing we want is more
slaughter, but we cannot sell the lambs to foreign markets and there isn't the
demand for them in Britain."
Richard
Haddock, of the NFU's livestock committee, said: "We are doing everything
we can to deal with this problem, but you cannot turn off farming like a
tap."
The
RSPCA, which is investigating allegations of cruelty during foot and mouth
culls, said it would take "a close interest" in the latest slaughter
operations.
About
one-third of Britain's lambs are normally exported to EU countries every year,
but the export ban - automatic under European law - has halted all foreign
sales.
The
ban will remain in place until three months after the last foot and mouth case,
and most senior industry workers say that it is likely to be next year before
exports are resumed.
With
new cases of the virus still being reported almost daily, farmers' leaders are
holding urgent talks with ministers to thrash out details of the slaughter,
including compensation, and other measures to reduce the surplus.
Under
the proposals being negotiated, farmers will get a basic payment, possibly as
low as £10, for each slaughtered lamb. Last week the official price for lamb
was £2.06 for a kilo, but by yesterday producers were being quoted £1.40.
