1997 Bridge to Bridge

The Sting, winner 1997.

There was none of the excitement that marked the spectacular effort of the Mr Walker team in 1996 to smash the classic race's record, but the 1997 Bridge to Bridge was witness to amazing displays of courage and determination.

A close battle between eventual winner The Sting, driven by Ken Broughton with Heath Broughton observing and skiers Daniel Auld and Brett Lehmann, and Thundernuts saw the two Super Class boats neck and neck until Wiseman's Ferry where Thundernuts withdrew due to engine problems. The Sting was one minute outside the record at 40m 57.12s, with skier Lehmann, a late addition to the team, reportedly tiring at the end of the race. Showdown, winner of the Hot Shots race the day before the Bridge to determine pole position, got a good start, but had one of its skiers hosed down by a competitor, slowing it up to finish seventh in Super Class.

In a superb display of peak fitness, World Women's champion Leanne Brown and silver medallist Joanne Hamilton teamed up to not only win the Women's class behind Supershot, driven by Rick Astill with Pat Iorianni observing, but breaking the record and finishing third overall with a time of 43m 12.59s.
