got a message from an HR peep from Screenvision on friday afternoon. didn't get a chance to call her back cuz i was in a rush to get to the airport...and to finish my crappy work. being sisyphus SUCKS. left work around 4 and it took me a remarkable hour to get to la guardia. i had the luck of catching the 6 train just as it was arriving @ canal and then snagging the M60 seconds before it left the 125th st stop. i thought i'd gotten to the airport early (my flight was at 5:59pm), but boy was i wrong. lines of irate travelers spun complicated webs throughout the entire airport. the one for airtran was especially wicked and twisted. hooray for the budget lines. they created a separate line for people on my flight, but it was still slow-going. and after hurling my checked baggage at the giant xray machine ("YES IT IS UNLOCKED. NO LOCKY!"), i sprinted over to the final security check. whew, not too long a line, thought i...and then i noticed the rent a cop guarding the second half of the line that was at least 200 people long. many tips could have been had if i had the entrepreneurial spirit to "deliver" food, drinks, and kiddie bathroom trips.

radiohead rorschach.
finally! i got a kitty! his name is beckham. for now. he's got crazy foot skills. he's 4 mo old and 50% white (lower) and 50% gray (upper). he's got amber eyes and blue tinges around his huge irises. he was a stray being housed temporarily by a nice lady in park slope. a faithful devotee to the "cat dancer" (tm) religion, he meows incessantly and i love him to death. i hope the meowing thing will go away though. i probably deserve it, seeing that i played the part of evil catnapper, ripping up a happy siblinghood.
it's too freakin cold outside for a snowball fight, so stay indoors and drink your hot cocoa while kicking ass!

i had a job interview on wednesday with euro rscg mvbms. the pos i'm applying for is advertising assistant on the intel campaign. i'm the perfect candidate. except that i fucked up the interview royally, stumbling + muttering + searching for words every two seconds. i'm so socially incompetent it hurts. well, with unsmiling cold-as-ice human resources interviewers anyway. i really need to practice for these things. someone prolly needs to slap me around a bit, like the rents did in the old days. i've gone soft.
yay insound/tigerstyle!
fao schwartz is going out of biznasty. *cry cry*
i'm heavily deathly incomprehensibly addicted to the fox network. well, their intentionally entertainment-oriented programming anyway. 'the OC' is heavenly and 'the simple life' is akin to watching clowns getting deep-fried in a dunk tank. gruesome, yes, but necessary.

so the post-mortem consumer spendage (out of grief or capitalistic motives i can't really make accurate accusations...) has begun. insound has a few of that limited edition 7" elliott just put out and as of this afternoon, they are long gone...most of them, surprisingly, to international customers. and there are currently 11 on backorder. i'm intriqued that the cash dropping began at 3:43:07 this morning, by a chica from MA who was kind enough to purchase a donner party cd in addition to the 7"...but it was a bit unnerving that people started to dig into their pockets so quickly; the order was made less than 24 hours after his official time of death (about 1:18 pm tuesday - 10/21).
personally, i thought it was a practical joke at first. and then when i realized it was true, i thought "gee, i really should have seen him when he played brooklyn in june." i'm so petty.
anyway. thanks for sweetening and softening mix tapes i have both made and received, elliott. rest well.

*****equilibrium (2002) - plot - derivative. acting - excellent. fight scenes - sans wires, it puts the matrix to shame. actors - HOTT. christian bale, taye diggs, and sean bean (lord of the rings) for the girlies and emily watson for the boyz. budget - low. with surprises around every corner, i couldn't help but love the quirks, subtleties, and above-action-film-average-dialogue. unapologetically drawing familiar elements from movies like the matrix, gattaca, and virtually any film set in the future, it brings up interesting issues about feeling, the absence of feeling,
$20 million budget.

what a sad little dope i am. er, can be. yeah. can be. seeing aloha, palomar, and q and not u tonight. @ knitting factoreeeeeee. should be a blast. i just watched a movie called "cube" circa 1997. *ahem*
****cube (1997) - amazing little underground sci-fi/horror flick shot on a shoestring budget. well, they had a set that basically consisted of two inter-connected rooms, so i guess that's about as budget as it gets. anyway. in brief, this movie was the very definition of a "thriller". i had my pillow in a sleeper hold the entire 90 minutes. six everyday joes (well, 4 joes and 2 janes) wake up inside a cube shaped "public works project" and have slight troubles while attempting to escape. lethal cheesecloth, voice activated death, and zero food/water/facilities stand in their way of ever seeing sunlight again. i thought i would get bored of seeing the same set used over and over again (props to clever + efficient use of color), but i walked right into a constant and extremely intense anxiety attack. it dives right in with zero explanation and leaves you with almost less knowledge than you began with. and definitely more questions. but what it really makes you think about is what you would do if you were in that situation. unrealistically realistic. the acting is terrible, granted, and the math which acts as their savior is rushed through in perfect cinematic tradition, but something about the film grips you. well-paced, with stereotypical characters that actually expand their stereotypes rather than hide behind the inherent assumptions, "cube" kept me guessing. and grossed out. and appreciative of my non-trapped-in-giant-metal-box status. see it!

happy fourth of july to you all. matter of fact i haven't been all that happy as of late. but since hearing someone bitch and moan about their disappointments and letdowns in life is a bit of, well, a bummer, i'll list the glorious non-emotional adventures i've had in the great big saucy apple.
-gay pride parade - scored oodles of free condoms, flavored lube, and rainbow drenched stickers - so if you want to help me use up my sudden surplus, my contact info is listed above and accurate
-spotted some guy that sent me a nerve.com collect call rapping about sucking and fucking on one of the gay pride parade floats
-saw singapore sling, apparat organ quartet, and trabant (all hailing from iceland) at summerstage in central park (for free! yippity yay!)
-checked out hot guys on the subway + in central park + in jane magazine with my new roomie
-grinded my crotch into my imaginary boyfriend @ filter 14 with the best of the booty bar hotties
-saw charlie's angels 2 (full throttle - *****) with my friend anne and laughed my ass off. best of all, i got to see it for $5 in cobble hill, sat behind my boss + his date, and got drunk on vodka tonics w/strangers afterwards
-watched miniature fireworks on the roof
-waited in line for a vice/budweiser 4th of july party in williamsburg before deciding $10 cover was just too expensive. especially when you had to pay more to eat and drink. hipster bastards. the people-watching element was amazing though. i've never seen so many cool high-heeled shoes in my life. and mullets. oooooo the mullets.
-i've stopped believing in love. it's all about hooking up these days. i'm not saying it spitefully. i've been pretty evil and manipulative myself. regretfully. regrettably. which ever one is appropriate. and spelled correctly.
-bright eyes is the epitome of whininess (such tasty sexy brilliant whininess) and that's all i have to say about that.
-but conor oberst really has no right to be depressed and on prozac. he's too fucking cute to be allowed to be disturbingly sad. but i guess he got over it. cuz all he writes is country pop shit now.
-(i'm bitter)
-hey! who said that!
-words mean nothing. only action has an impact. fuck those politicians. and sexy silky smooth-talking ex-lovers.
-h&m stores are so fucking smart it's ridiculous.
-i just finished a book called "norweigan wood." it's by some japanese guy. it was supposed to be good. i was not impresssed. now i'm reading something called "run catch kiss." i read "the extra man" by ames not too long ago. hooray for pop novels. lesbianism, sodomy, and plain old sex everywhere. facilitates the diddling.
-ugh. i go to bed every night sticky. i'm not so much a fan of the humidity. i wonder when i'll move out west. maybe once i get sick of trying to be anorexic but failing because i don't have the will power, even though being a pocky stick thin model is so so so so so so so so enticing due to the huge bonuses of hot boyfriends ("boyfriends" plural!), juicy sex, and weekly paychecks of $10,000+. i really need to get laid.
-my parents don't read this. i don't think.
-saw enon @ sin-e. panthers opened up for them. panthers have vivacious energy, but...truth be told and breath be held...their music sucks.
-roamed the town with my roomie paul. he makes my life bearable. he's one of those people that are capable of sympathizing and empathizing and entertaining all in one breath. rock on boyo.
-was led on by a dj. fuckin rock stars. fuckin a. fuckin a i need to be anorexic already.
-got a (slightly damaged) copy of the "yoshimi battles the pink robots" 12" as well as a soft boys album (vinyl) for free thru werk.
-messed up a billion times in my new duties @ insound.
-got frustrated and embarassed and infuriated a zillion times in my new duties @ insound.
-got my personal ad published in timeout. hellz no i ain't telling you which issue.
-got my personal ad plastered all over theonion.com, fark.com, salon.com, clevescene.com, nerve.com, and god knows what other random locales situated ephemerally on the internet.
-read on the roof.
-listened to music on the roof.
-thought about jumping off the balcony @ werk. but then i realized my splatter would hit all the pretty mercedes and porsches and some poor underpaid employee of the city's sanitation force would have to clean up my self-pitying mistake and i just can't live with that. or be dead with that. yeah.
-i hate people in committed relationships. single straight boys are in such dire short supply here in nyc. those damn supermodels are throwing off the balance of things. fuckers.
yeah. so that's me. i've had a fun couple of weeks. i'm not a fan of summer. especially in the city. but i suppose i'll find a hottie one of these days and counter every argument i've made in these psychotic statements.
i hate you all.

monday again, eh? happy belated easter. i don't celebrate it. except to ingest copious amounts of sugar covered sugar morsels, aka peeps.
i'm sick. sore throat. coughing up gross crap. stay away from me. i'm miserable.
i've been worried as of late. furrowed brows, pensive looks, gazing into space, and such. i wouldn't tell you why if you asked. and you won't ask. so that's that.
i <3 insound.
mogwai is playing irving plaza (nyc) in june. see you there.
saw postal service + cex on friday. nice mellow chill happy poppy show.

i rode my bike for 3+ hours today. over the brooklyn bridge to manhattan. hit vice + supreme + triple5soul. got a miss sixty jean dress for $20. also snagged a $196 button 'you must create' down shirt for $20. i have no idea how much the dress is worth retail. maybe i could find out on ebay. visited 'tents + trails' and bought mittens cheap.
then over the williamsburg bridge to brooklyn. bought girl scout cookies from a "thin mint station". ate dinner @ a restaurant called "black iris." yummy middle eastern grub.
i'm tired. i've been up since 8. and exercised too much. my crotch is sore.
electricity in nyc is expensive. conserve or die.
*****signs (2002) - much better than i anticipated. i liked it just as much as "the sixth sense". great acting. engaging plot. well made.
*****final fantasy: the spirits within (2001) - extremely well-crafted. amazing graphics. i wonder how long this took to make. worth a looksee.
listen to les savy fav. if you get a chance to see them live, do it. they will rock your socks off. if you're lucky, they'll do it with their cocks out.
[3/14/03] ... FridaY 11:19 a.m.
FRIDAY! i don't know what's wrong with me. i'm totally chatty and happy all the time now. something in the heavily polluted air of NYC i suppose. anyway, it's a beautiful day out. a little chilly, but once you feel the sun on your shoulders...wheee. so i watched 2 excellent movies in the past 2 days. the first movie ("old school"), you'll agree with me right off the bat. the second movie ("the core"), on the other hand, you'll think i'm psycho to like it.
*****old school (2003) - will ferrell is THE MAN. i hate comedies with a passion and this is the funniest movie i've seen in a good long while. i hate greeks, i hate frats, sorority sluts, the lot, but wow, they did a good job with this movie. i liked it so much i'm going to buy the dvd when it comes out; i would have no qualms about paying full price. great pranks, hilarious dialogue, crazy stunts. 30 year old guys trying to relive their drunk tank days. simply amazing. GO SEE IT NOW!!!!
****the core (2003) - i was invited to a press screening through my internship ("the core" doesn't come out nationwide until march 28th). i was totally expecting this movie to SUCK HARDCORE. like terrible. like "armageddon" terrible. like "joe's apartment" terrible. and i was proved seriously wrong. it runs a bit long, a little under two hours, but you don't feel it. the special effects are truly spectacular. the sets were huge. the stunts were insane. i have no idea what the budget was for this movie, but i'm sure it is approximately equal to the combined annual GDP of several small third world nations. the acting was bearable, dialogue was campy and the movie's producers didn't hold back at all in making fun of themselves. they knew it was an absurd idea that armageddon come from the stalling of the earth's core, but they definitely researched this film to the hilt. there's actually a bit of character development in the movie too, something you don't see often in action/scifi movies. one thing i have to warn you about though....SEE THIS MOVIE IN THE MOVIE THEATERS ON THE HUGEST HUGEST HUGEST SCREEN YOU CAN FIND. i was enthralled for the entire two hours i sat on my ass, but it would definitely not have had the same effect if i watched it on my dinky 20" tv screen at home. so hurry out and spend the $10 (if you're in NYC) to see this movie in theaters. PLEASE. it rocks. you won't regret it. honest.
[3/11/03] ... TuesdaY 1:40 p.m.
happy 311 day. i'm all mixed up.
40 hr weeks are not fun when you're sick and have headaches.

[2/26/03] ... WednesdaY 5:11 p.m.
listening to my mother rant about the uselessness of a career in music/design whilst i type. go to med school. law school. wall street. try anything but a creative job. happy birthday cathy.
so i start an internship @ insound tomorrow. i met a cool boy today too. i'm floating...well, aside from the berating on my ears of my mum's voice.
The world's oldest Asian elephant, 86-year-old Lin Wang, seen in this undated photograph, died of old age on Feb. 26, 2003, at the Taipei Zoo. The much-loved elephant was a World War II veteran that carried cannons for the Japanese army in Burma. He was awarded to Chinese troops as a war trophy after the defeat of the Japanese and moved to Taiwan with the Nationalist army in 1949. (Reuters - Handout)
it's bitter cold in nyc. find a snuggle buddy. quick.
[2/24/03] ... MondaY 7:36 p.m.
went to the bowery ballroom for the first time on sat night. i had the pleasure of seeing mr. brownstone (guns n roses cover band), uncle jimmy's dirty basement (a clown, puppets + sex), and satanicide (long haired metal people). UJDB was by far my favorite act, as well as the most polished live show i've ever seen. if you have a chance to see these guys, dish out whatever cash they're asking for (my admission was $12).
saw "Pantaleón y las Visitadoras" (Captain Pantoja and the Special Services) on friday night. i give it 4 out of 5 stars. it's a fun spanish film put out in 1999 (2002 in the states) about a goody two-shoes peruvian soldier assigned to a secret mission of constructing and maintaining an army-catering bordello. lots of sex, lots of humor, superb acting. i think it's rated nc-17. if not, it should be. i gave it 4 out of 5 because the ending is a bit cheesy, though not the entire movie. beautiful women AND men (surprisingly). fun little date movie.
green tea ice cream is the best.
22 in 2 days. yikes.
[2/19/03] ... WednesdaY 9:36 p.m.
i was @ rockefeller center this evening for a taping of "last call with carson daly". laura prepon (the redhead from "that 70s show"), reggie miller (basketball player from the indiana pacers), and BAM! the WALKMEN (new yawk RAWK!) were there. it took forever and a day of waiting around to actually get into the studios, but it was worth it. the "fan club" sat at the back of the audience for the interviews and got to stand up at the front when the WALKMEN played. of course, they played "we've been had", the song that's been plastered into the saturn ads. these guys are rockin live. the show airs friday 2/28/03. look for me. i have a red hoodie and short black hair. i think i'm self-involved enough to tape it when it comes on too. shame on me.
[2/18/03] ... TuesdaY 2:15 p.m.
interviewing is a full-time job.
thomas campbell is my hero.

netflix critiques:
*****the cook, the thief, his wife, and her lover (1989) - artsy, pretentious, a wonder to look at. thin plot, but the acting, sets, and cinematography more than make up for it. not for the faint of appetite.
****the thomas crowne affair (1968) - faye dunaway freaks me out...but there are DUNE BUGGIES!!!! 'nuff said.
*****dogtown & z-boys (2002) - peggy oki is my hero. a must for any skater.
*****jesus' son (2000) - i've never seen a movie with a less coherent plot that i liked better than this one. billy crudup and samantha morton are great. druggies are much funnier than straight-edge kids. best "comedy" i've seen in a while.
****some folks call it a sling blade (1993) - short + sweet. note it is NOT the full movie "sling blade", just a short. billy bob's in this one too.
in short, i love it here. come visit!
love,
cat
