We may never hold a tournament. This might be the way we'd do one if we did.
RetroSub spearfishing tournaments are meant to be low-key events with more emphasis on doing things the old fashioned way than spearing lots of fish. The scoring system helps to enforce this by using a bonus system for historic (or prehistoric) equipment.
The scoring system has not been finalized, but will likely be based on the standard "point per fish, point per pound". A maximum of 5 fish may be taken, and a maximum of one from each specie. Minimum size and other restrictions are still being debated. Suggestions? Send 'em in.
Modifiers are multiplied by your point score to give bonus points to people using the most challenging equipment. Equipment modifiers run from 1 to .1, depending on the severity of the handicap. Add up the total equipment modifiers, multiply that by your fish score, and add that to get your total score. For example, if you weighed in four fish (4 pts) for a combined weight of 10 pounds (a subtotal of 14 pts) and had an equipment modifier of 1.5, then your total score would be 35 pts (14 pts + (1.5 x 14 pts = 21 pts)). If a particular piece of equipment doesn't appear on this list you may make up a fair modifier. Any homemade equipment that uses period components and construction methods falls into the appropriate historical category. Hey, even though the real vintage stuff is cooler, there's no reason to be a snob about it.

Spearguns that use a two stage trigger and have a trailing line: A hinge gun is perfectly acceptable with a shooting line; A speargun with a two-stage trigger is OK as long as it is a freeshaft gun. Neither of these weapons count for bonus points and are on the technological edge of retro. (Although historic spearguns are
not legal for the tournaments they are 100% certified for other club activities.)
