Presley Bishop came home from work depressed on 1st October 1978 in Littleton, Colorado, and went to bed. He stayed there for three years, during which he wore a hole in the bed, and lost 9 stone, and grew a beard down to his stomach and fingernails six inches long.
In August 1981 his widowed sister Bernice, in desparation, called the cops and he was moved to a nursing home. Asked by the police how he felt he replied: "fine". It was the first word he had uttered since he had taken to his bed.
