How To Make your own Squeegee

Be sure to read through this entire procedure before starting. The optional heated plastic procedure can cause second degree burns (or worse) so extreme caution should be exercised if you elect to follow it. It occurred to me while looking at a display in my local K-mart that $12 was a little excessive for a slender piece of plastic with a slip of neoprene. I'm talking about their price for a stick squeegee. So I made my own.

All you need is the straight part of a heavy-duty plastic coat hanger and that darn neoprene. If you want fancy, include some of the curved part of the hanger to make a handle/hook. Cut it off to size. You can do this next step one of two ways. You can just drill some small holes in one end or you can first flatten the end using either a butter knife or just some sand paper. If you just flatten the end with some sandpaper it's a lot easier to drill the holes.

Otherwise, I've found that if you use the butter knife you can widen out the end lending more strength to the part that does the work. An electric stove works best for heating up the coat hanger and the butter knife is then used to flatten the softened plastic. Be very careful as the hot plastic can stick to your hands and burn you. Make sure it's an old disposable knife.

Drill several small holes in a line placing them as close to each other as you can. Once the holes are drilled, cut between the holes with an exacto knife and sand it smooth to make a slot. Put the neoprene in the slot and you're ready to rumble.

As I said before, you can make a hook in the end. I heated mine over an electric stove to make it pliable and then curved it into more of a hook shape. It's a lot easier to burn yourself doing this last step so be very careful! Good shooting!
