B. Swimmers are encouraged to attend practice as often as possible, a suggested "minimum" is 12 times per month.
C. Practices are still held on many holidays...please check the monthly calendar (included with newsletter) for days when the pool will be closed.
D. See accompanying article on practice "attitudes" for more detail.
(DCDAC Club Guide. page one)
IV. "Attending Swim Meets"
A. Every swimmer is encouraged to attend swim meets. Parents are asked to be involved in the process of registration, encouragement, and transportation of children to the various area swim meets.
B. Steps to register for a swim meet:
1. Get a meet sheet at least three weeks in advance of the meet you plan to attend from Coach or Team President.
2. Complete meet sheet (see attachment on "how to fill out a meet sheet") and mail with payment to appropriate swim club.
3. Bring your children, or arrange for their transportation. Allow EXTRA travel time to meet locations you have not attended previously. Usually directions are included on a meet sheet.
C. Make sure to write down children's swim times in various events and enter them on the attached "times log" for future reference.
D. What to bring to a swim meet:
1. WARM clothing for swimmers. Outdoor meets can get very cold as swimmers compete and stand around in wet swimsuits! Also make sure to bring extra dry towels, fluids, carbohydrate snacks, and change of clothes.
2. Lunch, or money to purchase food at meet snack bar. Swimmers are "hungry animals"!
3. Swimmers' timing log to enter times (and pen!), swim guide, and USS Swim Card..
4. $2.00-4.00 for purchase of meet program.
5. Optional items for parents: folding chair, sun umbrella, hat/visor, lunch, sunscreen, very warm clothing, etc.
E. What swimmers should do at a meet:
1. Check in at least one-half hour prior to the first event you have signed up for! (If you do check in 30 minutes prior to your first event, you will be disqualified from your first TWO events).
2. See your coach before swimming each event (for last minute instructions, and to advise him/her of your heat and lane assignment); and after each event (for helpful advice and corrections if necessary).
3. Make sure to properly warm up, and warm down after each event. One of the most common causes of swimmer's injuries is lack of proper warmup.
4. Team Meets: Several times per year the coaches will designate a "Team meet". These are meets which require as many swimmers present as possible to score team points, etc. Please make a special effort to attend these meets.
* HINT FOR PARENTS: Befriend another DCD Family! This is often the best way to get helpful information on how things work. Don't be afraid to ask questions and get involved!
(DCDAC Club Guide, page two)
V. "Annual DCD Events"
A. APRIL - DCD "Dolpha-Thon" Fundraiser (Children obtain sponsors to support them by donating a certain amount per lap which they swim).
B. APRIL - DCD Awards Banquet (A "pot luck" style banquet dinner where each DCD swimmer is presented an award for their achievements).
C. SUMMER (June-August) - Summer Pre-Comp Program Fundraiser (Other children are invited to attend a summer "learn to swim" program. Those completing course are encouraged to join the Dolphin Team. DCD swimmers help teach and train these new swimmers).
D. SUMMER - DCD "Summer Outing" (Children are taken on a special, fully paid for field trip... to places such as "water slide parks", etc.)
E. SEPTEMBER - "Welcome Back Banquet" (A special "pot luck" style banquet to welcome the swimmers back from summer vacation. A night of encouragement for current and new families and swimmers).
F. NOVEMBER - Annual "Daly City Dolphin Thanksgiving Invitational Swim Meet" (A swim meet hosted by the DCD Team at our home pool. A major event and fundraising opportunity. A great meet to have the first time swimmer attend).
G. DECEMBER - Christmas Banquet / Gift Sharing-Carolling (A Christmas banquet sharing the holiday cheer. Often DCD decides to go Christmas carolling at a rest home, and help needy families with gift and food items).
VI. "Parental Duties"
The Daly City Dolphin Swim Team CANNOT function without the involvement of the parents. Below is a list of things parents MUST do to make the club function. It certainly is not a complete list, and we invite EVERY PARENT to attend the DCD Parent Board Meetings during the middle of each month (see monthly calendar for date and time, and call Team President for location and to let them know you will attend)
A. Be involved and active with your children! This means taking a great interest in their achievements, getting them to practice and meets regularly, and of course providing the financial means for dues, equipment, etc.
B. Being a timer at Swim Meets. You will be asked to spend at least 1-2 hours timing at meets your child attends. It's easy...they'll show you how.
C, Taking an active role in the following Fundraising Events:
D. Stay in close contact with Coaches, Team President, and Membership. If you cannot make your dues payment due to financial emergency or hardship, or decide to quit the team, let the Team know IN WRITING. Communication is vital!
1. DCD Thanksgiving Meet - parents are vital in making this event happen. We need help in the areas of timing, snack bar assistance, hospitality, setup and cleanup crews, parking lot management, signup table workers, and much more! You will be contacted prior to the event by the D.C.D. telephone committee.
(continued next page...) (DCDAC Club Guide, page three) (Parental duties, continued...)
2. DCD Dolpha-thon - parents are needed to count laps during the day your swimmer swims, and to help your child find sponsors to pay them an amount per lap to raise funds. Every family must participate.
D. Help in other areas of DCD Team activity:
1. Volunteer to help setup/cleanup of annual banquets
2. To help make telephone calls, attend DCD parent board meetings if you want, and to even become a club officer if the opportunity arises.
3. Make suggestions! If you see an area that needs improvement, please let us know about it, and get involved in helping. The Dolphins are YOUR team...so participate as much as possible.
