Former MPG Director Dies At 69

CASTLE HILL -- Leland H. Smith, 69, a prominent Castle Hill farmer, died at a Presque Isle hospital Tuesday following a short illness.

He was born in Castle Hill Nov. 29, 1898, the son of Charles and Martha (Sloat) Smith.

Smith was a member of the Mapleton Methodist Church; a 55-year member of the Castle Hill Grange; a member of Washburn Masonic Lodge, a former selectman of Castle Hill and a past director of Maine Potato Growers of Presque Isle.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Hazel (Snowie) Smith of Castle Hill; two sons, Merle and Vaughn, both of Castle Hill, a brother, Guilford of Mapleton three grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Graves Funeral Hone in Presque Isle Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held in the funeral home Friday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Raymond Murchie, pastor of the Mapleton Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be In Castle Hill Cemetery.

Masonic services will be held 8:15 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
