Capt. Whittaker Died September 20th On Luzon Island

Capt. Clarence Warren Whittaker of Presque Isle, age 27, died September 20 on Luzon Island of broncho-pneumonia. He had been seriously injured in a jeep accident on September 14 and pneumonia developed causing his death.

Capt. Whittaker was graduated from Presque Isle High School in 1936 with the honor of co-valedictorian, and from Bates College in 1940 cum laude. On entering Tufts Medical School in September 1940 he was awarded the Commonwealth Scholarship for the state of Maine. He was graduated in December 1943. Following this, he served as interne at the Boston City Hospital specializing in medicine. In September 1944 he was commissioned an Army doctor. After a few months of training in the states, Capt. Whittaker was sent to Luzon Island in April 1945. At the time of his death he was head of the medical department for a Luzon P. O. W. camp.

Capt. Whittaker, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Whittaker of Presque Isle was a member of the Easton Baptist church. He is survived by his parents, his wife, the former Margaret Dickinson of Washburn, four brothers, Jasper, Darrell, Ralph and Lyle, and one sister, Mrs. Wallace Campbell of Fort Fairfield.

The remains of Capt. Whittaker are being sent to his home and the date for a military funeral will be announced. 1
