Military Funeral Services Held For James M. Story
WASHBURN, July 16 [1946] - Funeral services for James M. Story, 36, who died at Oceana
Field, Va., July 8, were held at the Washburn Baptist church, Thursday afternoon. Rev. Nelson
Felch conducted the service. Mrs. Verna Churchill was organist and Mrs. James Sperry soloist.
Following the church ceremony members of the Oscar Dow Post, American Legion, under
commander Fred Farley formed in lines between the church and funeral coach. As the casket was
carried though the formation, the post banner was dipped in salute. Color bearers, color guards,
chaplain and bugler preceded the procession to the grave. Bearers marched on each side of the
funeral coach with the naval escort directly behind.
These were followed by the firing squad. American Legion, relatives and friends. Impressive
military services at the grave were conducted by Kenneth Grant, chaplain.
The firing squad consisted of Henry Myshrall Jr., Fred Umphrey, Kenneth Story, Raydon Corey.
George Conley, Keith Umphrey, James Butterfield and Freeman Corey.
Color bearers were, Ralph Amero, Earl Campbell; color guard, Everett Cary, Arthur Umphrey;
chaplain. K. P. Grant; bugler, V. E. Barker.
Bearers were Harry Libby, Milton Marr, Sterling Levesque, Malcolm Dyer. Robert Blackstone
and Lewis Cole, Escort, James Galleger of Roxbury. Mass., and commander, Fred Farley.
