Planting Glossary
Acid Soil - A soil with PH lower than 7
Alkaline Soil - a soil with PH higher than 7
Alpine - A plant originating at high altitudes, usually smaller and slower growing than normal
Annual - A plant that completes its life cycle within one growing season
Balled and Burlap - A plant dug with a soil ball attached, which is wrapped in a square burlap
Bare Root - A method of transplanting where the plant is dug and all soil is wahed from the roots
Biennial - A plant that requires two growing seasons to complete its life cycle
Bud - An undeveloped or dormant leaf, shoot, or flower
Bulb - A compressed stem, with fleshy leaves attached that is used to store food
Conifer - A tree or shrub that bears cones, ususally evergreen but not always
Contained Grown - A plant in a container, as opposed to bare root or balled and burlapped
Crown - The part of the plant where the stems meet the roots
Cultivar - A manmade variety, not found in any natural population
Deciduous - A plant that loses its leaves at some point in its growing season
Division - A method of propagation in which the plant is divided into two or more groups
Dripline - The outside edge of a plants leaf canopy, the point where rain drips around that edge
Dwarf - A plant that is smaller or slower frowing than is normal
Evergreen - A plant that retains all or most of its leaves year round
Fall - A plant's peak bllom time falls somewhere between late September and frost
Fertilizer - Chemical nutrients supplied to plants in either organic or inorganic form
Genus - A group of closely related species, sharing identifiable characteristics
Hardiness - The ability of a plant to survive in a particular location
Herbaceous - A plant that dies after frost, regrowing from underground roots and stems
Humus - Decayed or partly decayed plant material, peatmoss, compost
Hybrid - A plant bred from parents of different species, genera, or varieties
Lime - Ground limestone, containing calcium and occasionally magnesium, used to raise soil PH
Loam - A soil containing less than 25% clay, less than 50% sand, and up to 50% silt
Microclimate - The enviroment at a small specific location
Mulch - A material used to control weeds, conserve moisture, and regulate temperature
Naturalized - A plant that is so integrated with its enviroment that it appears to be native
Node - The joint in a stem where the leaves are attached

Sun in the morning or evening and a few hours of afternoon sun
Perennial - A plant that lives for more than 2 growing seasons
PH - A measure of the hydrogen ion content, used to describe relative acidity or alkalinity
Pinnate - A leaf composed of leaflets arranged in two rows along an axis
Rhizome - a horizontal stem at or just below the ground, often mistaken for a root
Shade - An area shadowed in some degree from the rays of the direct sun
Species - A group of plants generally similar to one another, subdivision of a genus
Spring - A plant's peak bloom time falls somewhere between April and June
Summer - A plant's peak bloom time falls somewhere between late June and early September
Sun - Full sun for the entire day or at least 5-6 hours of afternoon sun
Variegated - A plant that is striped or motled with different colors in some fashion
Variety - A group of plants differing consistantly from the species form, either natural, or manmade
