The photo immediately above is my garage as it now looks after several months working on it. So far the project has involved having the garage lifted off the ground, reparairing the studs and sills, having footings dug and poured, laying two courses of old fashioned block, pouring a new slab, setting the garage down and then doing all the needed carpentry. While we have done the woodworking and painting ourselves, cementwork, lifting and block laying were hired out to a local outfit known as Block and Beam. They did a good job. I did the repair of the sills, studs and siding.
All of this was needed because the garage was actually below grade by about a foot for I don't know how many years. The garage backs onto an alley and it seems that as additional materials were added to the alley surface the garage wound up below grade. The termites have a better idea of how long the dirt was piled against the walls, but they are not talking.
This is a rather old before picture of the garage.
The rubble is from the old driveway/parking pad that I took out with a sledgehammer while singing "I fought the Law." The tub is now in the bathroom. The ugly garage door was one of those newfangled metal ones that we had to put in to shut the building up since the brief former owner/speculator tore out the originals. This required framing in a header to lower the clearance to the standard 7 1/2 feet. You can judge the aesthetic effect for yourself.

This is a much later picture after the lifting, but before I started working on framing in the doorway trim and doors, though it does show some of the carpentry I did to make the doorway the right size.
In this photo, you see how it looks now that I did the trim carpentry and have one set of scavanged doors in. In the next image you get the same thing from another angle.

This is a photo of the door I made for the other side. I used beadboard plywood and one by eight and one by ten lumber to glue it up to copy an older door that was too far gone to salvage. It is pretty heavy to move, but works well with the hardware from the other door. Dimensions are 8 feet wide by 7 feet, 7 inches tall. You can see the door installed in the picture at the top of this page. The black track is the salvaged hardware from the old door that was too far gone to reuse.
Here are the roller mechanisms that support the garage doors in the track. These were rebuilt with off the shelf bearings attached to replace older integral bearings that had worn completely out.
