Notes:
Buildings around the square, include the Victorian bulk of the former Hotel Windsor (1878, renovated in 1985), the Neo-Classic Sun Life skyscraper, the city's oldest and put up between 1918 and 1933, and the towering Banque de Commerce Canadienne Impériale (1962), its 45 floors an example of a very fine architectural style that stands out from the often monotonous functionalism of many modern structures.
1. Boer War Memorial
George William Hill (1862-1934),
This monument honours Lord Strathcona's public service in raising the
"Strathcona's Horse" Regiment. Strathcona was born in Scotland. The
Strathcona Horse, a Canadian regiment that fought in the Boer War.
2.Cathédrale Marie-Reine-du-Monde
1085 Cathedrale
Designed as a scaled down replica of St. Peters's basilica of
Rome by Fr. Joseph Michaud. Work began in 1875 and the new church was consecrated
in 1894. It was made a minor basilica in 1919 by Pope Benedict XV. It was
rededicated in 1955 to Mary, Queen of the World, by Pope Pius XII at the
request of cardinal Paul-Émile Léger. The front of the church is
topped by statues of the patron saints of thirteen parishes of Montreal
who donated them.
3. Robert Burns 1759-1796 Statue
Burns is Scotland's greatest poet. This is a copy of the statue by George A. Lawson erected in Burns Statue Square, Ayr in 1891. Several other copies of this sculpture stands around the world notably in Melbourne (Australia), Detroit (USA) and Vancouver, Winnipeg.
4. Sir Wilfrid Laurier statue
by Emile Brunnet (1953) honoring Wilfrid Laurier, the French-Canadian
statesman and Prime Minister of Canada from 1896 to 1911.
