Let's first talk about live plants:
You should wait until your tank is about a month old to introduce bare root live plants. The reason behind this is so that there is nutrients for the plants to grow. You can put any plant in you like. I have found that different plants grow better in different tanks. You will just have to experiment on which plants work best for you. Here are a few that work well in my tank. Hygrophilia works real good, Banana plants are really cool. They look just like a banana with leaves that will grow to the top of your water level like a lily pad. Wisteria is another good one. Like I said before you will have to get several and see which ones work best for you.
Don't be surprised to find that your fish are eating your plants. Most fish will do that, only some are more destructive than others. The larger the more destructive. also if you get any snails to eat the algae, they will also eat your plants.
Now about plastic plants. These cost a little more but they will last forever (well almost). They come in different heights like the real ones and are some are bushy and some aren't. I have combined both into my tanks.
You can even clean these when they start to look a bit slimy. You soak them overnight in 1 part bleach and 4 parts water. The next day be sure to rinse well with hot water to get rid of all the bleach and you will see your plants look almost new !
