back to the gerbils!

This gerbilarium is the home of Marla, Merlin and their pups. It is a 69 gal tank (140x45x50 cm) with a selfmade cat- and gerbil-proof wood & wire top.

My gerbies got 4 houses (two "double-decker"). Two houses are mainly used to sleep in, one is for food only.
They use it just like a hamster and collect all the food in there, they don't eat immediately!

They all love their sand-baths but unfortunately also use them as toilets...
Therefore the chinchilla-sand (I use it because it doesn't get that wet and smelly as normal bird-sand etc.) has to be removed every day.
That's quite expensive, but absolutely worth it, I believe.

For another sand bath on top of another nest-box I use normal bird-sand, because they love to gnaw on the small shell pieces which are a part of the sand I use!

This is nearly the complete tank (on the right):
Doesn't it look messy ;o) ?!?

There are lots of tunnels built between and with several wooden tubes, toilet paper rolls, stones and other stuff.
The litter is a mixture out of different wooden shavings, hay, straw, sand, corn cob mix and lots of other shredded things such as kitchen paper rolls, dry dandelion etc. Of course my gerbies mix it themselves...!

This is how the litter looks like after a few hours of gerbil-shredding-teamwork:

Funny, isn't it?

I'm still planning to add a second level but I'm not really sure how to realize my ideas up to now.
I'd really love to add a 'moveable' glass-level, but it doesn't seem to be that easy I thought it would be... =-(
