After a while, I thought about my rats a lot, and especially about Shade.  I wanted to prove to myself that I could raise a happy, healthy blue rat.  So, I went to my dad and managed to convince him to let me get another one!  We drove all over town looking at stores, but the only place with blue rats had only males, so I had to wait.  However, in a week I called back and they had two females, so we drove over and grabbed one!  She was alert and curious when we first saw her, and she remained that way forever onward.  She was very ticklish, and loved to explore. Introductions went fantastically with Streak and Summit, and they were the best of friends.  However, Shine took a little longer. Of course, I figured it out eventually. (Go see Rat Advice, Introducing New Rats for some more details.) They all slept together and groomed each other consantly. The only thing about Twilight was that she was strangely small; I don't honestly know if that is just a feature of blue rats or what, but she was at least a couple inches shorter in length than the other rats. Twilight wasn't nearly as friendly as Streak or Summit or even Shine; it probably had something to do with the fact that she wasn't socialized as much when she was small. Once she got to know someone, she would cuddle up inside their shirts and poke her nose out the collar, sniffing the air. At the slightest noise she'd bolt back inside! When she was out roaming my bedroom, she was nearly impossible to catch due to her speed, and she loved to find REALLY irritating places to hide! For instance, her favorite spot was inside my mattress. Guess how fun it was to get her out of THAT. She also liked to get behind my bookshelf, under my quilts on my bed, and behind my dresser drawers! If I managed to catch her at all she'd give a loud squeak, kind of like, "Shoot! You got me!" But, it wasn't to last. One day, she simply got sick and died, at only a year old. She was totally healthy the night before, and the next morning she couldn't hardly breathe, she was bloated, her fur stuck out everywhere, her eyes watered, and she obviously wasn't cleaning herself. Before I could even get her to the vet, she died. I have no idea what caused it, but it was a shock both to me and to my other rats.
