Rats are, in my mind, the perfect pet.  They're clean, they're cheap to obtain and maintain, they're intelligent, and they are so sweet!   Rats often get a horrible reputation, from carrying disease to biting small children.  In truth, domestic rats almost never bite, and they carry almost no diseases that we can catch; it's their fleas that are to blame, and not many domesticated rats have them.  I've only been aware of rats for three years, and I've already had seven of them!  I think that's pretty good, considering my mom's allergies and everybody else's lack of enthusiasm.  My cats were easily trained not to come near, even Tigger the Supreme Hunter, and the rats got their freedom!  Rats like to sit on your shoulder or on your lap while you watch TV or do chores, and they even like to travel in cars and planes, or so I've heard!  Don't hold their "icky" tails against them, they are very useful for balance and various other purposes!  My rats have been nothing other than spectacular to me, and once you see a little fuzzy baby grab ahold of your finger to give it a washing, you'll be hooked too!
